Venom: The Last Dance, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 film Venom: Let There Be Carnage is scheduled for release on October 25, 2024. When the first full-length trailer for the film was released on June 3, 2024, many fans noticed that Michelle Williams, who played Eddie Brock aka Venom's romantic interest in the previous films in the franchise was missing.
Williams' absence from the trailer of Venom: The Last Dance soon became a hot topic of discussion with many people coming up with their own theories. However, these theories were put to rest by the upcoming film's director, Kelly Marcel who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter on October 23, 2024.
When asked about Michelle Williams' absence from Venom: The Last Dance, Marcel confirmed it was because the film is a road movie set away from San Francisco. She explained that Eddie, aka Venom, needed to be isolated, relying only on himself, which meant leaving behind all familiar connections, including Williams' character Anne Weying, who had been important to Venom's development.
What did Kelly Marcel have to say about Michelle Williams' absence from Venom: The Last Dance?
As previously mentioned, the screenplay writer and director of Venom: The Last Dance, Kelly Marcel recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter. She answered questions concerning the absence of several known faces from the upcoming film including Michelle Williams.
Her full quote from the conversation read:
"Yeah, we really wanted to isolate them. We wanted to take them away from their comfort zone. We wanted to take them away from everything they knew and everyone they loved, so that they really only had each other to rely on now. "
It continued:
"We knew that we wanted them to reach symbiosis with each other and decide that they were going to be the Lethal Protector, and that they were going to go on this journey together. "
Marcel also explained why the step was essential for the film. She emphasized that, apart from one particular character, there was no room for any other characters in the story. She stated:
"And, of course, that quickly becomes very dangerous for them, because the very act of them being together means that the world is at risk. So they come to understand that the thing that they have chosen is actually their downfall, and so all of the characters from the previous movies — other than Peggy Lu’s Mrs. Chen — didn’t belong in this road trip story."
