Francis Ford Coppola's long-drawn epic, Megalopolis, which reimagines New York as a modern Rome, is finally here for the mass audience. The film premiered in the festival circuit some time back but only arrived in theatres the previous Friday, September 27. Alongside the grand anticipation when one of the masters of cinema makes a film, this also has some exciting gimmicks that would appeal to every moviegoer.

In contrast to the likes of Oppenheimer and Alien: Romulus, which were shot on IMAX, Megalopolis is shot with three Arri Alexa cameras - the 65, the LF, and the Mini LF, with Panavision Sphero 65 and Panaspeed lenses. Yet, there are two reasons it makes for a better viewing experience on IMAX.

The first important reason, which is also an era-defining innovation, is that some IMAX theatres offer a new form of live interaction. It is something that has not happened in any large-scale movie before. Moreover, as the movie would be out through IMAX's DMR process, it would be a richer and more color-heavy experience if one watches it on IMAX.

While the standard large screens may suffice for many in the second department, those who can should try to get into one of the venues offering the live interaction sequence.

What is the Megalopolis: Enhanced IMAX Experience?

Megalopolis doesn't need to be viewed on IMAX for its shooting format or color reproduction. But it surely needs to be seen in this particular IMAX format, which has been termed as Megalopolis: Enhanced IMAX Experience.

In this particular experience, viewers will be able to see a whole new experimental approach to the movie, which was devised by Coppola himself. What further elevates this sequence is an additional scene where the character in the movie interacts live with the people outside.

While this experience is listed in very few places, this would make for the best IMAX viewing experience. Most showings of the movie will not contain this highly experimental sequence. However, those who can get a ticket to one of the theatres presenting this experience should choose this over any other viewing option.

However, it is important to note that those who do not attend the Enhanced Screenings with this additional sequence will not miss out on anything narratively. Moreover, many theatres use a pre-recorded version of this interaction to give the audience an insight into what is happening at bigger venues.

What is Megalopolis all about?

Francis Ford Coppola's decades-long dream in the making, Megalopolis is a science-fiction epic written, directed, and produced by Coppola. It is set in a future modern United States, where visionary architect Cesar Catilina attempts to build the metropolis of New Rome. The film references the Catilinarian conspiracy in its premise.

The brilliant cast of the movie features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D. B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.

The synopsis for Megalopolis reads:

"A conflict between Cesar, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare."

Interested audiences can catch the movie in theatres nearby.
