The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences postponed its Oscars nominations due to severe wildfires impacting Southern California. It is going to unveil them on January 23, 2025, as opposed to January 17, 2025.
The voting period for Academy members has also been extended to January 19, allowing more time for participation amid ongoing disruptions caused by the fires.
According to The New York Times, Bill Kramer, the CEO of the Academy, stated:
"We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community"
The Academy has also committed $750,000 in donations to help victims of the wildfires through MPTF (Motion Picture & Television Fund).
The impact of wildfires on Los Angeles
According to the Los Angeles Times, the wildfires have razed down close to 1,000 buildings and resulted in at least 24 fatalities since January 7, 2025.
Thousands have been forced to leave their homes as the wildfire continues unabated. Under these circumstances, the Academy took steps to allow its members the opportunity to provide support for themselves and others who have been displaced.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Kramer stressed that community played an important role in trying moments such as this:
"The film industry is a close-knit community. We must come together during these trying times and support one another."
The Academy's decision to extend the voting period reflects an understanding of the difficulties that many members are experiencing.
Changes to the nominations timeline
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar nominations are now scheduled for January 23 at 8:30 am ET and this announcement will occur virtually without in-person media attendance.
According to The New York Times, other events related to the Oscars have also been affected, notably, the Oscars nominees' luncheon planned for February 10 has been canceled, and the Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony set for February 18 will be rescheduled.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Academy has vowed to hold the Oscars on March 2, 2025. The Oscars ceremony will be hosted at LA's Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood. The event will be broadcast live on ABC and available for streaming on Hulu.
Supporting initiatives from the Academy
According to the Los Angeles Times, in response to the ongoing crisis caused by the wildfires, the Academy has committed $750,000 in donations to help victims through MPTF (Motion Picture & Television Fund).
The Academy leadership has expressed deep concern for its members who live and work in areas severely affected by the fires.
According to The New York Times, in a statement in which he commented about rescheduling Oscars nominations support, Kramer said:
"As we aim to be considerate of the infrastructure and accommodation needs of the region in the coming weeks, it is essential that we modify our event schedule"
