The Man from UNCLE is a spy movie released on August 14, 2015, in the United States. The movie is written by Lionel Wigram and Guy Ritchie, who is also the director. Primarily released in the United States and the United Kingdom, it released on Netflix on July 27, 2024, and has been trending in the United States.
Since the first sequel of the movie was out, there have been questions swirling around about the second part of The Man from UNCLE. Actors and makers of the movie have exueded optimism about a new part.
However, the possibility of a new season is almost nil, as there are problems like financial issues, writer availability and a controversy involving lead actor Arnie Hammer.
The Man from UNCLE stars Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo, Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin, Alicia Vikander as Gaby Teller and Elizabeth Debicki as Victoria Vinciguerra. It follows CIA agent Henry and a KGB agent Arnie teaming up to prevent the making of an illegal nuclear weapon.
Why there may not be a sequel of The Man from UNCLE
After the movie released in 2015, the lead was asked by Glamour in August that year about the idea of the sequel. He said that nothing of that sort had come to him yet but that he would “love to do it.”
In an interview with SlashFilm in 2017, co-lead actor Armie Hammer said about the sequel that he and Lionel Wigram are all in to reboot the movie. While talking about his conversation with Lionel about writing the sequel of The Man from UNCLE, Hammer said:
“Apparently, the sequel is being written right now. No pressure, Lionel!"
Although nothing really came out about the new movie, Hammer remained consistent about his interest to make a second part.
“I would do another 'Man from U.N.C.L.E.' in a heartbeat,” said Hammer in a 2020 Collider interview.
Even after plenty of talks and discussions, The Man from UNCLE is unlikely to have a sequel, and a major reason for that is financial problems. The first sequel barely grossed $100 million at the box office in 2015.
Another reason is the controversy surrounding Armie Hammer. In January 2021, a post went viral on Instagram that claimed some messages from Hammer to multiple women referring to details of dark se**al fantasies and cannibalism.
A woman who allegedly received messages from Hammer also claimed that Hammer had se**ally assaulted her. That same month, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Hammer’s ex-wife said that she suffered from emotional abuse while living with Hammer, which led her to hospitalization with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.
Apart from these reasons is the availability of writer and director Guy Ritchie, who is currently involved in writing In the Grey, which is set to release on January 17, 2025. He's also directing the upcoming Apple movie Fountain of the Youth, which started to film in Feburary 2024.
