What is Whiplash about?

Whiplash is based on a short film by Damien Chazelle of the same name. It chronicles the journey of an ambitious jazz drummer, Andrew Neiman, played by a steller, Miles Teller, who strives for greatness to make a legacy like his childhood idol Buddy Rich.

Terence Fletcher recruits him to play in his Studio ensemble, but he is incredibly strict and becomes increasingly abusive. Andrew initially finds him encouraging, believing that greatness requires hard work and sacrifice. He ends up breaking up with his supportive girlfriend to focus on his ambition.

However, Andrew later finds out that Fletcher's former student, Sean Casey, hanged himself due to anxiety and depression. He testifies against Fletcher, which leads to his termination. A few months later, they meet again. Fletcher invites Andrew to perform with his band, to which he agrees, not knowing that Fletcher plans to sabotage his career.

The film is a psychological drama focusing on Andrew's drive for greatness. Fletcher is, in a way, the personification of his relentless pursuit of perfection and shows how it can lead to psychological torment.
