Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga premiered on May 24, 2024, at the Cannes Film Festival. Director George Miller has revealed that a black-and-white version of Furiosa will be made. Miller's latest tells the genesis tale of Charlize Theron's Furiosa and serves as a prequel to 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, albeit this time, Anya Taylor-Joy plays the role.
Reviews for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga were almost as good as those for Fury Road, but initially, it wasn't clear if the prequel would receive a "Black and Chrome Edition." However, in an interview for the Happy Sad Confuse podcast, Miller said,
"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga indeed be getting a monochrome version."
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga focuses on when little Furiosa is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers. She is captured by a large group of bikers under the command of the warlord Dementus. They discover the Citadel, ruled by the Immortan Joe, while sweeping over the Wasteland. Furiosa quickly finds herself engaged in a never-ending struggle to get home as the two rulers struggle for supremacy.
Director's take on black & white version of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
George Miller revealed that there will be a black-and-white version of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
The director suggested that the version for Furiosa will be dubbed the "Tinted Black and Chrome" edition, carrying over the nomenclature from his version of Fury Road that was shot in black and white. He stated,
“We’ve done it already. It’s the last thing I did on this film, and I call it "Tinted Black & Chrome," or I want to call it Tinted Black & Chrome. I must say, it’s really interesting. I’m still trying to demystify why the black and white, for me, has something more elemental to it. I still can’t quite put my finger on it.
The director continues,
"It’s not because they look like old black-and-white movies, it’s something else. It’s like if we took a picture of ourselves right now, it might look a little more dramatic if it was black and white.”
All you need to know about the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a prequel to the nearly universally beloved Fury Road (2015), which is widely considered one of the greatest motion pictures of the twenty-first century and possibly the best action movie of all time. Fury Road won six Oscars out of ten nominations.
Taylor-Joy succeeds Charlize Theron as a younger version of Furiosa. The epic tale centers on her struggles in the post-apocalyptic Wasteland, which begins when she joins a large biker horde led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
The movie made its debut in 2024 at the Cannes Film Festival. Before that, on May 15, Wednesday, it made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. There, it was awarded an Out of Competition berth nearly nine years to the day after Fury Road made its festival debut in 2015.
Filming for this movie was completed in October 2022. However, pictures of Chris Hemsworth in character as Dementus started to circulate in July 2022. Principal photography for the movie started in June 2022.
Are Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Mad Max: Fury Road similar?
Mad Max: Fury Road is essentially one big automobile chase that takes place over several days. In that movie, Tom Hardy's character, Max, follows Furiosa as she attempts to use the War Rig to escape the Citadel, making Furiosa the primary character.
Furiosa brings back several beloved characters, including Immortan Joe, Rictus Erectus, The People Eater, The Bullet Farmer, and Organic Mechanic, in addition to the title character. Additionally, as both films are set in the same Mad Max universe, there are a lot of stylistic, color, and locational parallels between them.
However, the two movies differ greatly in terms of narrative organization. Furiosa is very much an odyssey, following the life of Taylor-Joy's character as she battles Chris Hemsworth's Dementus over approximately 15 years.
In other words, rather than being a continuous auto pursuit, the movie delves deeper into Furiosa's biography and upbringing to show how she came to be the character portrayed in Mad Max: Fury Road. Having said that, both movies have a similar level of hectic, adrenaline-fueled action.
Many set pieces in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga include vehicles, many of which include the well-known War Rig. Miller demonstrates his mastery of action scene staging with this new prequel. The impending Tinted Black & Chrome edition of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Mad Max: Fury Road strikes a fair balance between the old and the modern.
