Captain America: Brave New World is an upcoming film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will be released on February 2025. The film has Antony Mackie reprising his role as Sam Wilson, who initially played the support superhero Falcon and co-starred with Bucky Barnes or the Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan.

However, while the two of them partnered up in the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes won't be returning for Captain America: Brave New World.

Instead, Sam Wilson will be partnering with Joaquin Torres, played by Danny Ramirez, who will become the New Falcon.

Bucky Barnes will not return for Captain America: Brave New World, despite his prior prominence

Bucky Barns has been a prominent character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his first appearance on 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. He was introduced as one of Steve Roger's closest friends, from before he enlisted in the super-soldier program that gave him his powers.

The film ended with Captain America sacrificing himself by crashing a plane packed with explosives into the ocean. However, he doesn't die but instead falls into a 70-year coma. After he awakens and comes to terms with his situation, Steve assumes Bucky's dead.

However, a major plot point in the subsequent film Captain America: The Winter Soldier reveals that Bucky did survive those 70 years after all but under very dire circumstances. After Captain America's disappearance, Bucky was enslaved by HYDRA and brainwashed into becoming their assassin.

Steve is forced to face off against him while he's mind-controlled by HYDRA leader Alexander Pierce. But once the HYDRA mastermind is dealt with, he willingly allows Bucky to beat him up in order to make him snap out of his brainwashing.

Bucky and Steve cross paths again in Captain America: Civil War, where he's on the run from authorities due to his prior crimes under HYDRA.

When the United States government tries to formally regulate superheroes via the Sokovian Accords, Steve Rogers opposes the measure in large part due to wanting to protect Bucky, which puts him at odds with Tony Stark, who's strongly in favor of Superhero registration.

Baron Zemo exploits this rift to tear the Avengers apart from within, thanks to blaming them for the death of his family, which culminates in the reveal that Bucky assassinated Tony's parents.

Steve and Bucky go into hiding at Wakanda until the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Bucky is one of the people erased from reality due to Thanos's Infinity Stones but gets revived in Endgame after the effects of Thanos's Infinity Gauntlet are undone.

Towards the end of Endgame, Bucky bids farewell to an elderly Steve when he reveals he decided to retire from being Captain America by choosing to start a new life with Peggy when he traveled back in time. Bucky then partners with Sam Wilson throughout the Disney+ Falcon and the Winter Soldier series.

In Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky and Sam Wilson deal with the aftermath of the events of Avengers: Endgame by combating extremist radicals known as the Flag Smashers, who intend to fight for those whose lives were upturned by Thanos' actions.

The end of the series has him come to terms with his traumatic and checkered past, allowing him to move on from the fight.

Joaquin Torres is Sam Wilson's new partner in Captain America: Brave New World

In Captain America: Brave New World, Bucky Barnes will be replaced by Joaquin Torres, who will be the Falcon to Sam Wilson's Captain America. This has a precedent in the comics, as Joaquin was originally introduced in a 2015 story arc for All New, All Different Marvel.

There, Joaquin was a Mexican teenager who obtained his powers thanks to being subjected to human experimentation by the Sons of the Serpent. In Captain America: Brave New World, Joaquin is instead a member of the US Air Force who's friends with Sam and learns of his true identity in Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Captain America: Brave New World will release in theaters on February 2025, as part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
