Will there be a Downton Abbey 3? Everything we know so far

Fans of Downton Abbey will be happy to hear that a third season of the show is on the way. Universal Pictures UK announced the same on June 26, 2024, on Instagram with the remark,

"A new motion picture event. The third film in the beloved #DowntonAbbey franchise will be released only in cinemas September 12, 2025."

Julian Fellowes’s historical drama Downton Abbey aired its first season on April 26, 2010. The show was renewed for five more seasons seeing its avid fan base and growing popularity. The last episode of the sixth and concluding season aired on November 25, 2015. After a total of 6 seasons and 52 episodes, a Downton Abbey film was released on September 20, 2019, followed by another in 2022.

The second film titled Downton Abbey: A New Era, was released in 2022. It starred Jim Carter, Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, and Penelope Wilton among others. Directed by Simon Curtis, the film collected a total of $92.7 million against a budget of $40 million as per IMDb. With a decent box office collection and an impressive IMDb rating of 7.4/10, it paved the path for a third film.

Downton Abbey 3 is set to release on September 12, 2025, globally and is currently under production. No details regarding the plot of Downton Abbey 3 have been revealed to date. The film is all set to be produced by Gareth Neane, Liz Trubridge, and Julian Fellowes, who also produced the 2019 Downton film.

Downton Abbey 3 will be produced by Carnival Films and distributed by Universal Pictures International and Focus Features.
