The Scream franchise was created by Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two and the fourth movies. The series has resulted in six installments to date, with the first one released in 1996. The franchise has also seen multiple talented directors helming the various movies.
Wes Craven directed the first four films, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing the fifth and sixth installments. Now Kevin Williamson is set to direct what will be his first Scream movie.
Scream VI hit the theaters in March 2023, and was generally received favorably. The movie starred Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, and Courteney Cox, among others, making $169 million against a budget of $33-35 million.
With multiple actors reprising their roles in the latest part, fans can expect something similar with the seventh installment. According to Variety, Scream 7 is officially in the works, and for the time being, has been given a release date of February 27, 2026.
Scream 7 officially enters production, with Kevin Williamson set to direct
Williamson may be the creator of the franchise and the story, however, he has yet to direct any Scream movie. This is now set to change, with The Vampire Diaries creator set to direct his first Scream installment.
Fans will be delighted with the latest updates, considering the kind of drama Scream 7 has had to traverse through. A seventh movie was expected to enter production right after the release of Scream VI. However, Melissa Barrera was fired, following her comments about the Israel-Hamas war.
Further, Jenna Ortega, who starred as Tara Carpenter in Scream VI, also dropped out due to her commitment to Netflix’s Wednesday series. Finally, Scream 7 was initially set to be directed by Christopher Landon, who stepped down after claiming that the experience turned sour for him. According to Variety, Landon stated that the directorial post was his “dream job that quickly turned into a nightmare.”
This was followed by delays related to the SAG-AFTRA strikes. Now, however, things appear to have gotten back on track. Kevin Williamson has been finalized as the director, and Neve Campbell is once again expected to play the fan-favorite role of Sidney Prescott in the upcoming movie.
Guy Busick is also returning as the screenwriter, and the story is expected to focus on Sidney Prescott once again, who will be facing off with Ghostface. According to Variety, further rumors surrounding the return of Patrick Dempsey as Detective Mark Kincaid have also been apparent.
This is in addition to the potential return of Courtney Cox, who has been seen in the role of Gale Weathers thus far. Still, no official confirmations for Cox or Dempsey have been made yet. However, Neve Campbell said the following about her return:
"I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way. I think that means a lot to women and to society."
Regardless, Scream 7 can be expected to be a major landmark for the long-running franchise. The series has grossed over $910 million worldwide to date, and may as well exceed the $1 billion mark with the release of the seventh movie.
Scream 7 is currently expected to hit theaters on February 26, 2026.
