Inspired by Peter Brown's novel, The Wild Robot is an animated film directed by Chris Sanders. The story revolves around a robot named ROZZUM unit 7134 (Roz), left on an island, learning to live in the wild. The film was released in theatres on September 27, 2024.

For those awaiting its OTT release, the movie is expected to be available on Netflix after May 2025. According to the deal previously sanctioned in July 2021 between DreamWorks and Netflix, the film will be on Netflix in mid-2025 after its release in Peacock.

The official synopsis of the movie reads:

"The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot--ROZZUM unit 7134, "Roz" for short -- that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling."

Netflix will receive the movie during what's known as the pay-1 window. This window lasts for 18 months and starts approximately four months after the film's theatrical release.

During this time, Netflix and Peacock will share streaming rights. Peacock will have the movie for the first four months, followed by Netflix for the next ten, and then it returns to Peacock for the final four months.

After an initial window on Peacock, DreamWorks Animation's Netflix deal lets Universal's animated films stream. Netflix will stream the film for ten months starting in May 2025 and after four months on Peacock in January 2025. It will then return to Peacock for a final 2026 window.

Other streaming platforms

The Wild Robot will first show on Peacock beginning in January 2025 before making its Netflix premiere. Universal's approach is to first premiere films on their own streaming service then go on to other platforms. Before it arrives on Peacock, the movie might also be available for digital buy or rental on other sites as Amazon Prime or Apple TV.

The plot of the film

Roz, a robot, ends up on an empty island after a shipwreck. The Wild Robot tells her story. Roz starts to watch and learn from the island's animals when she's by herself and doesn't know what she's supposed to do.

As Roz gets used to her new surroundings, she becomes a part of the ecosystem and helps raise a gosling that has been left behind. Roz faces problems on her journey that test her programming and her emotional strength. These problems show how complicated the relationship is between technology and nature.

Production and directors

Chris Sanders is in charge of making the movie. He's known for his work on Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon. The film was made by DreamWorks Animation in a style that looks like it was painted by hand.

Before DreamWorks begins outsourcing animation, The Wild Robot is reportedly the last in-house animated picture they produced. Kris Bowers, who marks his first effort on an animated project, composes the soundtrack for the movie.

The cast

The Wild Robot boasts a stellar voice cast. Lupita Nyong'o voices Roz, the central character. Pedro Pascal plays Fink, a mischievous fox who befriends Roz. Kit Connor voices Brightbill, the orphaned gosling raised by Roz.

Other notable voices include Mark Hamill, Bill Nighy and Stephanie Hsu. Each actor brings their unique touch to the characters, elevating the emotional depth of the film.

Following its first Peacock streaming, The Wild Robot is likely to be on Netflix by mid-2025. Fans of animated movies may find waiting for the Netflix release to be tiresome, but the movie is well worth it.

Early 2025 will see it shown on Peacock or in cinemas until then. The emotive story of the movie guarantees that viewers of all ages will remember The Wild Robot, thanks in great part to an outstanding voice cast and amazing animation.
