Many are looking forward to the release of the dystopian disaster comedy film Y2K in theaters on December 6, 2024. Starring Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, and Rachel Zegler in leading roles, the film explores a fictionalised version of the infamously famous Year 2000 problem or the Y2K problem.
For those who are not aware of what it is, the term "Y2K" is commonly used to refer to the bug or the software problem that threatened to disrupt all forms of technology-related activities in the late 1990s (the year 1999 to be specific). If the same had happened, the human race would have come to a standstill, and it would have taken large amounts of money to restore everything to normalcy.
However, due to the pre-emptive measures taken by some of the most sought-after computer programmers and IT experts, the issue could be reverted in some cases and in some cases the effects could be minimized. That said, going by the film's trailer, it appears that it explores what would have happened if the bug had affected all forms of technology, exemplified by computers malfunctioning and robots slashing people.
How to watch Y2K?
Y2K is being released in theaters in the US on December 6, 2024. This is after the film received a successful world premiere at South by Southwest on March 9, 2024.
As of now, there has been no information regarding a digital release of the film, however, interested viewers are anticipating some positive news soon. As a rule, many films made by A24 have been made available for streaming on Paramount Plus and Max which has caused many to believe that Y2K will probably make its way to one of these platforms eventually.
That said, it should also be noted that some of A24's films have been made available through Netflix and Plex in the past, therefore, it is still uncertain which of the streaming platforms will carry Y2K in case the film goes online.
What to expect from the film?
The upcoming release explores a twisted and mostly fictional version of the Year 2000 problem by taking it and its associated elements several notches higher. The official synopsis for the film also highlights the same. It reads:
"On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy."
