The disaster horror comedy Y2K, directed by Kyle Mooney and distributed by A24, has been released in the United States. The movie, written by Mooney and Evan Winter, chronicles an imaginative version of the Y2K bug crisis, which was expected to cause major technological issues at the turn of the millennium.

Set on New Year’s Eve in 1999, the film follows two high school friends, Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), who crash a house party. Eli hopes to kiss his crush, Laura, as the movie develops their chemistry.

As the clocks strike midnight, chaos erupts as the Y2K bug triggers widespread technological malfunctions. In a shocking twist, robots begin killing people, seizing control, and plunging the world into turmoil. Amid the devastation, humanity faces off against the central malicious A.I. that orchestrated the machines' uprising, fighting for survival against their own creations.

Towards the end of Y2K, Eli and Laura hatch a plan to stop the robots from taking over. Laura, a computer nerd, designs a virus that reboots the systems by reverting them to their previous configurations. Through this, they are successful in foiling the robots' plan.

In Y2K, Eli and Laura ultimately stop the robots by leveraging their knowledge of outdated 1990s technology. After losing several friends, Eli, Laura, and the other surviving characters seek ways to save humanity.

Laura finds a technicality in the robotic system controlling the electronics. She uses her technical knowledge to create a computer virus and disrupt their interconnected systems. As Laura faces danger, Eli wraps a condom around Laura's hand to insulate her, allowing her to safely insert the virus drive and take down the global network of sentient machines.

Although this marks the end of the robotic revolution, a scene towards the end has left fans questioning about a potential sequel. In the last scene, it is seen that humanity has survived and returned to using technology. Ash, one of the few surviving characters, owns an iPod, and for a brief moment, the audience can catch a glimpse of the A.I. on the screen.

This ending hints that although Eli and Laura were successful this time around, there is a chance for the robots to still come back and reclaim control of the world.

In the movie, the fate of humanity is in the hands of the robots after they unionize and start a revolution. It is disclosed that the humans who are not killed by the robots are still captured and turned into living server systems through microchip implants in their skulls. Through this, the machines are integrating humanity into a digital network.

In the end, several characters manage to make it through the movie's chaotic apocalyptic horror. Among the survivors are the main protagonists, Eli and Laura, who save the day with help from Ash (Lachlan Watson) and Fred Dunst (himself).

Eduardo Franco as Farkas, Mason Gooding as Jonas, Tim Heidecker as Howard, and Kyle Mooney as Garrett are also pivotal in driving the narrative. Among the central characters, Danny doesn't make it through the end, and the viewers can see Eli paying homage to his friend towards the end of the film.
