In his first post-accident interview with Diane Sawyer, he shared the specifics of the New Year's Day 2023 incident and his will to overcome its consequences.

Renner talked about being "awake through every moment" of the traumatic event. Along with his commitment to getting better, his honest account showed how the event had affected him emotionally and physically.

The show aired on ABC News during The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival, and Triumph. When Sawyer asked him to explain what he meant during the interview, he mentioned that protecting his nephew from harm was worth everything.

He replied:

"Yeah, I’d do it again. ‘Cause [the snowplough] was going right at my nephew."

According to a recent post published in Variety, on Jan 2, 2025, the accident happened on January 1, 2023, close to Jeremy Renner's Lake Tahoe residence. The 14,330-pound vehicle ran over him and severely injured him even as he tried to stop his Sno-Cat machine from rolling toward his nephew.

Renner survived soft tissue damage, a collapsed lung, and several fractures. Since then, the degree of his injuries and the surrounding events have become evidence of his bravery and will to survive.

Jeremy Renner was injured while trying to help his nephew remove a snow-covered vehicle. He stepped in to stop the heavy Sno-Cat machine from rolling uncontrollably and almost being struck. The machine nearly crushed him, causing severe injuries. His nephew, who saw the aftermath, described finding Renner in a "pool of blood" and feared for his life.

In the interview with Diane Sawyer, Diane read off the list of Renner’s injuries, which included eight ribs broken in 14 places, fractures in his legs, shoulder, and jaw, and internal injuries, including a pierced liver and collapsed lung. In his interview, he described the pain as excruciating, saying,

"I was awake through every moment.”

Jeremy Renner was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Centre in critical condition after the accident. The 911 call showed the urgency, with responders telling Renner to “keep fighting.” Following surgery and intensive care, Renner began a rigorous rehabilitation program.

“That’s not going to kill me, no way.”
