Jay-Z, born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969, is one of the most influential celebrities in the world of music and entertainment. His life story is filled with remarkable achievements that go beyond his iconic music career.

His career began with his debut album, Reasonable Doubt (1996), under his co-founded label Roc-A-Fella Records, marking the start of a groundbreaking journey in hip-hop. Over the years, he has sold over 140 million records and won 24 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most-awarded hip-hop artists of all time.

Beyond music, Jay-Z built a business empire. He co-founded Roc Nation, ventured into fashion, and acquired a streaming platform.

Here are some incredible facts every Jay-Z fan should know

1) His childhood is defined by challenges

Jay-Z had a challenging childhood. Growing up in Brooklyn's Marcy housing projects, he described in a 2010 NPR interview how his neighborhood had both fun moments and tough realities, saying:

"There was playing in the Johnny-pump (an opened fire hydrant) and the ice-cream man coming around and all of these games that we'd play, and suddenly it would turn just violent and there would be shootings at 12 in the afternoon on any given day. It was a weird mix of emotions. One day, your best friend could be killed. The day before, you could be celebrating him getting a brand-new bike."

Despite these challenges, music played an important role as he became a teenager. He was inspired by the huge record collection his parents owned, filled with music legends like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. This early connection to music ignited his passion for music and making rhymes, much to where he is today.

2) He started his hip-hop career at a young age

By the age of nine, he was already experimenting with his parents' record player, drawn to the art of freestyle rapping. His first exposure to the culture came from a local freestyle rapper who could turn everyday life into verses.

As a teenager, he started writing his rhymes on anything he could find, such as paper bags from the corner store. This, in turn, helped him improve his memory.

3) He lived a street life

During his younger days, he was introduced to the street life. Because illegal drugs were common in his neighborhood, he was eventually recruited by a bodega owner to deal in Trenton, New Jersey.

However, his escape from that life came in part due to a trip to London to record with his mentor Jaz-O. While Jay-Z was abroad, a secret indictment swept up 30 of his friends, several of whom were sentenced to prison. Particularly, he credits his survival to a combination of timing and chance.

4) He never writes down his lyrics

One of the most amazing things about Jay-Z's songwriting is that he no longer writes down his lyrics. Instead, he memorizes them. This started when he was young. And had to remember longer and longer rhymes. This trained his brain to recall lyrics instantly.

By the time he recorded his first album at 26, he didn’t need pen and paper anymore. He could just make up his verses on the spot. While this method is impressive, it has its downsides. He has even admitted that he’s lost entire albums' worth of material because he forgot the lyrics.

5) He is a billionaire

His business sense is just as impressive as his rapping skills. Over the years, he has built an empire that includes ventures in fashion (Rocawear), liquor (Armand de Brignac champagne and D'Ussé cognac), streaming (Tidal), and sports (Roc Nation Sports). His savvy business decisions have made him a billionaire. His wealth is proof of his ability to innovate.

Additionally, his partnership with the NFL to provide entertainment for Super Bowl halftime shows and assist with their social justice initiatives highlights his influence beyond music.

6) He is a champion for his family

Jay-Z's personal life is just as interesting as his career. His relationship with his father, Adnis Reeves, was strained for years after his dad left the family when he was a child. Although he felt angry and hurt by the abandonment, he eventually made peace with his father, encouraged by his mother. Their reunion was emotional, as he expressed his pain and disappointment, but it helped them heal.

Sadly, his father passed away soon after they reconnected. However, Jay-Z honored him by buying and furnishing an apartment for him. This experience of forgiveness and reconnection had a deep and lasting impact on the rapper.

7) He is a never-ending learner

Jay-Z’s intellectual pursuits move beyond music and business. As a kid, he excelled academically, scoring 12th-grade reading levels while still in sixth grade. He also developed an amazing love for books, with him deeming classics like The Odyssey and Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers as influential to his life.

His admiration for language and storytelling is evident in his music, where his lyrics often reflect profound philosophical and social commentary.

Meanwhile, his relationship with Beyoncé is one of the most publicized and celebrated in the entertainment industry. Today, Jay-Z focuses on raising his children, Blue Ivy, Sir, and Rumi, with the core value of compassion, hoping to teach them to understand the struggles of others while appreciating the sacrifices that brought them to where they are.
