Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo are both celebrated pop singers who share a common record producer, Dan Nigro. The duo has known each other since they started working on their respective debut albums alongside Nigro, CapitalFM reports.
Roan and Olivia first became friends as the Casual singer opened for Rodrigo on her Sour Tour in San Francisco in January 2020. Chappell has since opened for the Good For You singer several times, including on her latest Guts World Tour earlier this year.
Earlier in 2024, Chappell Roan appeared on the first episode of Capital Buzz's podcast, Making The Album, where the singer-songwriter revealed to having done the vocals on several songs of Rodrigo.
Obsessed was the "secret track" of Rodrigo's that Chappell Roan has worked on
On Chappell Roan's podcast interview with Capital Buzz, she revealed that she had recorded for the chorus of Olivia Rodrigo's bad idea right? but wasn't sure whether or not it had ultimately been used in the song.
The Femininomenon singer further added:
"But I am in Lacy and there's like a secret track called obsessed that's, like, on the vinyl, which I'm on. And I'm also on the Hunger Games song."
By the "Hunger Games song," Chappell Roan means Olivia Rodrigo's Can't Catch Me Now, which was released as the soundtrack of the 2023 American dystopian fiction movie - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
The music video of the track that stars Rodrigo was uploaded on her YouTube channel nine months ago and has since received 31 million views.
When asked by the host what led to Roan giving the vocals for Rodrigo's songs, the 26-year-old said:
"Well 'cause we all work out at the same studio, and Dan [Nigro] is like, 'Are you free right now? Can you come help?' and so I just, like, go over there and sing harmonies 'cause it's, like, really nice on a song to have kind of different tones."
Roan further added:
"[Olivia] is very open to having, like, another vocalist, and she's so sweet to me."
Roan was also asked if she had listened to Rodrigo's Drivers License before it came out, to which she nodded in affirmative, further saying:
"She had, like, the perfect storm, and oh my God! there's so much energy around Drivers License... when I heard [the song] before it came out, I was like, 'Dan, I think this is going to be on the radio,' and here we are."
Roan also called herself "lucky" to be able to hear "a lot of stuff before it comes out." The host of the podcast then pointed out how Rodrigo was such a fan of her. To that, Chappell responded by calling the 21-year-old "so sweet" for mentioning her as her top artist on Spotify Wrapped in an interview.
The interview Chappell Roan referred to was conducted by The Hollywood Reporter in December 2023. In it, Olivia was asked which artist she was listening to the most at the moment. The Drivers License singer answered by mentioning Roan's name, saying:
"Oh, OK! My Spotify Wrapped just came out. I think my number one artist was Chappell Roan. She just put out her first album, and Dan, my producer, produced it, and it’s amazing. So I’m listening to a lot of her."
Following the interview, Chappell Roan was the opening act for Rodrigo's 2024 Guts World Tour. Roan opened for Rodrigo from February to April 2024, in 24 shows across the US. Currently, both singer-songwriters are on their respective tours—Rodrigo on her second album's tour while Roan on her debut album tour.
