Rihanna, or RiRi, a name that she also goes by, is a global icon, a popstar, and a business mogul. The entrepreneur became a billionaire at the age of 34, having graced No. 21 on Forbes' America's Richest Self-Made Women, and the youngest woman to ever do so. In May 2024, with a net worth of $1.4 billion, she made No. 23 on the same list.
A good chunk of her income can be traced back to her game-changing cosmetics line, Fenty Beauty. Rihanna, born Robyn Fenty, launched the brand in 2017. The brand's success soared due to its inclusivity. She and French luxury conglomerate LVMH, co-own the brand, and Forbes reported that in 2020, the brand generated a whopping $550 million in revenue. By 2022, it doubled, Investopedia reported.
The Future is Fenty
The Fenty Beauty brand has since developed a cult following, mainly due to the extensive shade range it offers, a stark contrast from the rest of the industry. The brand kicked things off with 40 shades in their foundation line, a move that's never been done before. On her website, Rihanna states,
"What began as a concept, a desire really, for every person to feel truly represented, and not only included, but celebrated, has now become bigger than I ever imagined.”
Forbes also revealed that the singer owns a 30% stake in the Savage x Fenty line. By February 2021, the lingerie line raised about $1 billion. In March 2022, Forbes reported that the company could be valued at $3 billion. As with its beauty counterpart, this line has also made strides in promoting inclusivity and body positivity. The website states,
"Savage X Fenty celebrates confidence and individuality with sexy lingerie, elevated sleepwear, and more—designed for everyone, every mood, and every occasion."
The Barbadian native says on the website,
"Savage X means making your own rules and expressing your mood, character and style for you—not for someone else."
As the saying goes, she has "a finger in every pie." Rihanna also has a foothold in the apparel world, having had high-profile relationships with Puma. During her time as a global ambassador and creative director, she launched her own line of footwear and apparel under Fenty x Puma.
Rihanna's music and philanthropy
RiRi began her career in the music industry as a singer, gifting the world with her debut album, Music of the Sun, when she was just 17. This nine-time Grammy-winning singer has since released eight studio albums. She's had 14 singles dominate the Billboard Hot 100, and has sold a whopping 60 million albums and 215 tracks globally, her record label Roc Nation revealed.
She released her last song Lift Me Up in 2022 and has since been on a hiatus from music altogether, choosing instead to focus on her cosmetics line. Apart from being one of the best-selling digital artists of all time, Rihanna has made her mark on the silver screen with roles in Ocean's Eight and Guava Island.
The beloved icon is not just a business mogul, she's a philanthropist, as seen with her work in several charitable activities. She's especially been involved in education and emergency response programs, her Clara Lionel Foundation, named after her grandparents, has funded global scholarship opportunities. This foundation has also shelled out millions in grants for offering disaster relief.
In May 2022, Rihanna gave birth to a baby boy, whom she shares with partner ASAP Rocky. They revealed their son's name the following year to be RZA Athelston Mayers. In February 2023, during her Superbowl LVII halftime show performance, Rihanna was pregnant with her second child. The couple welcomed their second son in August 2023, adding "mom-of-two" to her growing list of feats.
