Sean Kingston alongside his mother Janice Turner made their first appearance in Florida federal on July 19, 2024. The mother-son duo has been accused of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and it was linked to a scheme, aiming to defraud victims of expensive items brought by them, through false documents.
The charges imposed on Sean Kingston and Janice Turner could lead to a sentencing of around 20 years, as per the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. The rapper even shared a response to reports of facing decades in prison through social media on Saturday, July 20. An Instagram post by Onsite! states that he wrote on the platform:
"Been dismissed! Smh."
He even posted a video on Saturday, July 20, through his Instagram Story. The clip focused on a few luxurious cars. While the caption read:
"New music coming soon. Stay tuned. We're working baby."
The court documents reportedly claimed that the duo stole jewelry worth $500,000 alongside "$200,000 from Bank of America, $160,000 from a Cadilac Escalade dealer, more than $100,000 from First Republic Bank, and 86,000 from the maker of customized beds."
A press release on the official website of the US Attorney's Office stated that Sean and Janice were charged in the presence of a grand jury in Miami, Florida. The release further stated:
"The United States Secret Service and the Broward Sheriff's Office investigated this case. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Anton and Trevor Jones."
The press release also says that the defendants made a false representation that they "executed bank wire or other monetary payment transfers" as payment for different items such as vehicles and jewelry. The charges stated that the duo attempted to acquire around $1 million through the entire scheme and even tried to retain the items by not paying for them.
Sean Kingston's last album was Road to Deliverance, which came out back in 2022. The 34-year-old is also popular for his songs such as Me Love, Face Drop, Eenie Meenie, and more.
Sean Kingston and his mother's were previously arrested in May 2024
Notably, a raid was conducted at Sean's Florida-based residence on May 23, 2024, leading to his arrest the following day. Apart from him, his mother was also arrested and several charges related to fraud and theft were imposed on them.
The Broward Sheriff's Office also confirmed Sean Kingston's arrest and they told People magazine on May 23:
"This evening, police in Fort Irwin, Calif., arrested Kisean Anderson, aka Sean Kingston without incident on a Broward Sheriff's Office arrest warrant for numerous fraud and theft charges."
The arrest was even recorded in a video recorded from a chopper. According to a May 23, 2024 report by NBC 6 Miami, the raid was linked to the pending payment of a 232-inch TV owned by Kingston. Attorney Dennis Card said:
"My client has a $150,000 television sound system that's in there, there's also about $1 million worth of watches that are in there, there's a $80,000 custom bed that was ordered. This is an organized systematic fraud."
Kingston was not in town at the time of the raid and Card claimed that he was allegedly a "scammer." Adding that he was on felony probation for "trafficking in stolen property" and had multiple judgments for obtaining watches without making any payment.
The raid emerged from a lawsuit filed by Ver Ver Entertainment in February this year, stating that he was yet to make payment for the items taken from them. People magazine got hold of the legal documents that said that Sean had made false claims of having a longtime relationship with Justin Bieber.
The documents also stated that Sean Kingston promised to collaborate with Justin Bieber and create videos for the company's promotions, in return decreasing the payments and credit of the price of the things that he took from them.
