Coldplay, the British rock band known for its transformative soundscapes and heartfelt lyrics, is set to captivate its fans with its highly anticipated 10th studio album, Moon Music.
In a tweet on June 17, 2024, the band announced that Moon Music and a waning planet artwork will be out on October 4, 2024. The album has already garnered significant buzz and widespread interest due to statements made by band member Chris Martin during a 2021 interview with Jo Wiley.
In the interview, Martin said that Coldplay would stop creating music by 2025, suggesting the 10th studio album could be the band's final studio album.
"Well, I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025, and after that, I think we will only tour. Maybe we'll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then," Martin revealed.
Everything to know about Coldplay's 10th studio album, Moon Music
On June 17, Coldplay delighted its fans with the announcement of its 10th studio album, Moon Music. This follows the band's recent revelation on Instagram regarding its upcoming single, "feelslikeimfallinginlove," which is scheduled for release on Friday, June 21, 2024.
The announcement was remarkably creative, featuring a subtle yet profound artwork. On X, Coldplay shared an image depicting a moon alongside a waning planet with a vibrant corona radiating from its surface, adding depth and significance to its album revelation.
"Moon Music. The new album landing on October 4. Limited signed editions available," the band captioned.
The album is produced by Max Martin, a Swedish record producer and songwriter. He also produced the band's Music Of The Spheres 2021, which, according to Billboard, charted No. 1 in the U.K. and Australia and No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
As the band is on its 'Music of the Spheres World Tour,' it shared a glimpse of its forthcoming song on June 16, 2024, in front of Budapest's Puskás Aréna crowd. The lead singer, Chris Martin, sang the chorus, which reads:
"It feels like I'm falling in love / You're throwing me a lifeline / Oh, not for the first time / I know I'm not alone," Martin sang.
The band claims Moon Music will be the world's first album released as a 140g EcoRecord LP (Long Play). Each album copy will be made from nine recycled PET plastic bottles that were restored from post-consumer waste.
Compared to traditional 140g vinyl, this will be eco-friendly as it will prevent the manufacture of more than 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic. In addition, there will be an 85% reduction in the album's manufacturing process of CO2 emissions/kg.
In addition, Coldplay has collaborated with The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit environmental engineering organization, for Notebook Edition EcoRecord LP. This edition will be made from 70% river plastic collected by The Ocean Cleanup from the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala.
Moon Music will mark its debut release on EcoCD, composed of 90% recycled polycarbonate sourced from post-consumer waste streams.
On June 3, 2024, the band provided insights into its tour sustainability initiative amid the 'Music of the Spheres World Tour.' Coldplay reported a significant reduction in direct CO2e emissions during the first two years of this tour, amounting to a 59% decrease compared to its previous stadium tour in 2016-17.
"We're happy to report that direct CO2e emissions from the first two years of this tour are 59% less than our previous stadium tour (2016-17), on a show-by-show comparison. These figures have been verified by the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative," reports Coldplay.
Moon Music is a continuation of Music of the Spheres. As the producer, Martin told Toronto City News in January 2023 that it would be the second LP in the series.
Preorders of the signed and limited editions are available on the band's official website.
