Beyoncé cried on the night of the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009 when 19-year-old Taylor Swift was a part of one of the most iconic moments in the history of the award show. After she won the Best Female Video award, Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech and commented that Beyoncé had the best video that year.
According to Viacom President Van Toffler, Beyoncé was crying in front of her father when he went backstage after the incident. She was emotionally devastated because the Cowboy Carter singer felt bad for 19-year-old Taylor Swift and how her moment was destroyed.
However, Toffler and Beyoncé decided to do something really special that night to make up for the embarrassment Taylor Swift suffered by giving the Grammy winner another chance to experience the moment and give her acceptance speech without interruption.
How did Beyoncé react to the Taylor-Kanye fiasco and how did she make up for it?
Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were both nominated for Best Female Video award on the night of the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009. Newcomer Taylor Swift was nominated for her work in the music video You Belong With Me while Beyoncé claimed her nomination for Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).
Taylor ended up beating her fellow nominees for the night and won the award. However, Kanye West didn't let Taylor finish her acceptance speech. He jumped onto the stage, grabbed the mic, and started speaking to the audience and Taylor herself.
"Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you. Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!" exclaimed Kanye West.
The unexpected interference left the entire audience shell-shocked and confused. The camera finally panned towards Queen Bey and she looked as shocked and confused as most others in the crowd.
In an interview with Billboard published in August 2019, Van Toffler shared that he went backstage to calm things down after the incident.
"There is Beyoncé and her dad, and she is crying. She was like, 'I didn't know this was going to happen, I feel so bad for her," revealed Toffler.
Toffler also met Taylor and her mother after the debacle and both of them were crying backstage. The Viacom President apologized several times and promised to try and compensate for the harassment Taylor faced onstage.
"Her mom and she were crying, and I profusely apologized and I said, 'I'm sorry, we didn't know. I know you have to perform in the next act and let me think about a way we can make it right for you. We're dealing with him now and I'm so sorry it ruined your moment," explained the President.
Eventually, he was able to keep his promise and Taylor got her moment because of his idea to kill two birds with one stone. The President of Viacom confided in Beyoncé that she would win an award that night and explained that she could let Taylor Swift have her moment, i.e., the moment that was allegedly ruined by Kanye West's interruption.
"At some point I let [Beyoncé] know that she was probably going to be up on the podium at the end of the show for an award. And wouldn’t it be nice to have Taylor come up and have her moment then? I had to indicate to her that she needed to stay, and perhaps this is a way to have this come full circle and let [Taylor] have her moment," concluded Toffler.
Sure enough, Beyoncé won the Video of the Year for Single Ladies and went onto the stage to accept the award. However, the Renaissance singer didn't give her acceptance speech and instead called Taylor Swift onstage.
“I’d like to give Taylor her moment,” Queen Bey said to the crowd.
Kanye West was reprimanded by Pink for his actions and wrote an apology letter that very night
MTV senior correspondent James Montgomery revealed that he saw Pink going up to Kanye West during a commercial break and giving him a piece of her mind.
"“I wasn't close enough to hear the conversation, but she was pointing in his face and nodding her head back and forth, and giving him her two cents about how [expletive] up this was and then stormed off," explained James Montgomery. (via Harpers Bazaar)
That very night, Kanye posted a long apology letter on his personal blog in his iconic block-lettered writing style. Ye accepted that he was wrong and also acknowledged Taylor Swift as one of the most talented artists around.
"“I’M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD’VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!" explained Kanye.
Ye continued by raving about Taylor's talent and apologizing to the Folklore artist multiple times.
"I’M STILL HAPPY FOR TAYLOR!!!! BOOOYAAAWWWW!!!! YOU ARE VERY VERY TALENTED!!! I GAVE MY AWARDS TO OUTKAST WHEN THEY DESERVED IT OVER ME… THAT’S WHAT IT IS!!!!!!! I’M NOT CRAZY YALL, I’M JUST REAL. SORRY FOR THAT!!! I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR TAYLOR AND I’M SINCERELY SORRY!!! MUCH RESPECT!!!!!" concluded Ye.
Taylor and Kanye West would go on to have a topsy-turvy dynamic in the years to come. Their relationship plummeted again in 2016 when Kanye released Famous containing controversial lines about Taylor. Their feud peaked at that time, with Kanye's then-wife Kim Kardashian getting involved in it as well.
Taylor recently released her latest album The Tortured Poets Department while Kanye West has collaborated with Ty Dolla $ign for their debut album Vultures 1.
