Nicki Minaj, who began her career in the rap industry with Fendi's Dirty Money Entertainment in 2007, just launched her own label imprint - Heavy On It Records - last year. Having released five studio albums, completed four world tours, and collaborated with the top talents of the music industry, Minaj has cemented a unique place for herself as an artist.
However, despite reaching incredible heights in her career, the Hey Mama rapper hasn't forgotten her roots and is always generous and giving towards her community and society at large.
Seven years ago, Nicki Minaj paid the expenses of 30 of her X (formerly Twitter fans) upon being asked for it. While the rapper has always advocated education, this spur-of-the-moment contest to help her fans with their financial burdens won countless hearts.
Nicki Minaj offered to aid education for the fans who scored "straight As"
It all started on May 7, 2017, when Nicki Minaj announced a contest, promising that she'd fly all the winners to LA to hang out with her at the MTV VMAs 2017. In a following tweet, the 41-year-old added that the contest was open to Barbz from all countries in the world.
A Barb (fan of Nicki Minaj) - @cjbydesign - commented on her tweet, saying:
"Well, you wanna pay for my tuition?"
While the reply appeared abrupt and, to an extent, even rude, Nicki wasn't offended. It didn't take her long to respond; she was happy to help them out but on one condition.
The Side to Side rapper wanted to see straight A's - or a 4.0 GPA - that could be verified by their school. Taking her generosity forward, she then offered to help 30 fans struggling to pay tuition as well, setting up a contest on X.
Nicki Minaj was ready to pay for the tuition fees, long-time student loans, as well as other expenses like books, summer classes, accommodations, and more. The rapper even paid for a camera for a fan who was a media production student.
The payments asked by Barbz ranged from $500 to $6,000 - with Minaj asking for bank details of them all and settling them one by one. At the end, she tweeted:
The generous rapper has always been a loud advocate of furthering education. Six years ago, Nicki Minaj joined hands with the Get Schooled Foundation to motivate students not to drop out of school. As part of a campaign organized by them, the Swalla rapper visited the Collins Academy High School on May 19, 2011.
Her visit came as a reward to the high school - which participated alongside 24 other schools in a six-week-long competition, using pop culture, media, and technology, to educate youth on the importance of attending school.
That wasn't all. The Starships rapper also participated in the "Principal for a Day" effort, where she became the school's acting principal for a day, surprising over 400 students by making rounds of each class and interacting with them.
She even led an English class, and later joined the all-school assembly to celebrate the accomplishments of the teachers and students.
"I am a young, female mogul before I am an artist. As a business woman there isn't a single day where I don't use my education or acquire new knowledge to ensure my success. Regardless of where you are today, with education you can take yourself where you want to be. That's why I am working with the Get Schooled Foundation. They are finding innovative and exciting ways to bring that message to schools like the Collins Academy."
Following her speech, Nicki Minaj also presented three students with exemplary academic records with scholarships of $10,000 each.
Minaj donated $50k to Toys for Tots in December 2023
On December 14, 2023, Nicki Minaj appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen to promote her recently released studio album - Pink Friday 2.
On the show, the Anaconda rapper gave away an array of toys - possibly the ones handed down by her son, Papa Bear - to the US Marine Corps's Toys for Tots Program - which gifts toys to children around the country.
In addition to the toys, the Young Money artist also gave away a generous check of $50,000 to the program as a donation. She said on the show:
"Thank you to you guys for allowing me to do this on your show. It was something that meant a lot to me... I would like to donate $50,000 to Toys for Tots because I love this organization. I love what it stands for. It means the world to me, and God bless all the children in the world."
Nicki Minaj also announced the upcoming tour for Pink Friday 2 on Cohen's show, revealing that it would kickstart in March 2024. The tour is now close to completion and will conclude on October 11.
