A brief overview of Dizzie Rascal and his career
Dizzie Rascal was born in East London, growing up in the poorer corners of the UK city. The singer elaborated on his upbringing and how it influences his music in an exclusive interview with Roderick Stanley on October 29, 2016, stating:
"I don’t think people realise how rough East London is. It’s a neglected area, an island. You feel trapped by it… the council estates and that. It’s a rough area but it’s a good area to come from as well. All the best urban music is coming from East. Well, my style of MCing, with garage, I found that I wasn’t really flowing with it…
Dizzee Rascal continued
"so I started making my own beats and spitting over them instead. Then, when the flow and the beats fit, I cut some dubplates and took them round the DJs. I’m taking it grimier, I’m the new generation… I was 16 when ‘I Luv U’ came out."
He later added:
"Yeah, East London’s attitude is… cynical, quite blunt. South London get a bit more excited about things, West London are a little more sophisticated, North, well, they’ve got their own attitude as well…That’s the thing, there ain’t a lot to do. They might build a couple of parks but when they get old and damaged, they don’t fix them."
Dizzee Rascal continued:
"Now, there’s a lot of gun crime. Back in the day, there were more stabbings.I used to rob… I did crime. But I wanted to do something else. It was good to do something positive. I didn’t like doing crime. I got out of it when I needed to, and not carry on and get greedy or stupid. Music was something I really loved doing, it happened naturally."
Dizzee Rascal released his latest studio album, Don't Take It Personal, on February 9, 2024. The album is his eighth studio album as well as being the first new album since 2020.
