American record producer and DJ Dijon Isaiah McFarlane, aka DJ Mustard, recently made an appearance at The Pop Out- Ken & Friends at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on June 19, 2024. After bringing out artists like Tyler The Creator, Dom Kennedy, and Blxst, DJ Mustard held a moment of silence to honor Nipsey Hussle, who passed away in March 2019.
The jumbotron at the concert displayed a photo of Nipsey Hussle alongside the words "RIP NIP: THE MARATHON CONTINUES". McFarlane also played Perfect Ten from his platinum-certified album of the same name which featured Nipsey. Additionally, DJ Mustard also told the crowd:
“Make some noise so loud that Nipsey Hussle can hear you”
Then, the Pure Water artist proceeded to play Nipsey Hussle's song Last Time That I Checc’d.

According to The New York Times, Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed on March 31, 2019, outside his clothing store in South Los Angeles. The Los Angeles police suggested that the shooting was a personal dispute, and two days after the killing, the gunman Eric R. Holder Jr. turned himself in. In 2023, Nipsey's culprit was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison by the court.
A-listers like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and Drake offered their condolences at Nipsey's demise and his send-off was a massive affair, with a mass gathering of fans in L.A.
DJ Mustard and Nipsey Hussle worked together on songs like Perfect Ten and Ridin' Around. In an interview with Variety dated July 2019, McFarlane talked about his equation with Nipsey. The Ballin' artist mentioned that he did the song Perfect Ten with Nipsey a month-and-a-half before his demise and that was the last song they did together.
Commenting on their bond, McFarlane stated:
"We had a big-bro thing going. We always talked about family, the kids. He was taking about what he had coming up – he thought he had all the time in the world, for music and everything else that he wanted to do. We had a really good relationship."
DJ Mustard told the publication that he was working on a series of songs with Nipsey Hussle before his death and that they had even discussed doing a project of their own together.
Talking about Nipsey's talent, McFarlane mentioned that Nipsey Hussle took a lot of time to make verses but he would submit "amazing verses every time". The Want Her artist said that the verse featured in Perfect Ten happens to be one of Nipsey's amazing verses and he never considered not releasing it.
DJ Mustard is known for working with Ty Dolla $ign and rapper YG and he also produced Kendrick Lamar's diss track on Drake called Not Like Us. His equation with Kendrick is the reason why he was present at The Pop Out- Ken & Friends Juneteenth concert.
Apart from McFarlane, Kendrick Lamar also mentioned Nipsey Hussle during the concert, stating:
"We been f*cked up since Nipsey died. We been f*cked up since Kobe died."
Lamar also acknowledged how every section united peacefully for the Juneteenth concert and played Not Like Us five times during the event.
