Ariana Grande has hit many remarkable milestones in her career as a singer-songwriter, one of which came in 2016. That's the year when Ari got the opportunity to team up with the musical prodigy from the 90s, Stevie Wonder.

Grande collaborated with Stevie on a track called Faith, which was released as part of the soundtrack of Sing, an animated jukebox musical comedy film directed by Garth Jennings. Released in theaters on December 21, 2016 (around Christmas), the movie turned out to be a commercial success.

The music video of Faith featuring Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande was uploaded on Wonder's YouTube channel on the same day that the movie, Sing, hit the theaters.

The music video, which has since amassed 58 million views, shows Stevie wearing sunglasses as he plays piano in a dark room. On the other hand, Grande is walking the streets in printed black platform heels, a dark denim dungaree paired with a tank top, in pale-framed sunglasses, and jewelry on both her hands.

Ari's hair stands out in the video, with its platinum color and top bun, which distinguishes it from her signature high ponytail. As Grande walks the street, on the walls of her background, we see the live sketch of Rosita, a character from the movie Sing, who is a hardworking housewife and mother of 25 piglets.

As Grande starts to sing, the live sketch of Johnny (a teenage gorilla from the movie) appears alongside her. In Grande's words, Johnny has "a Stevie Wonder swag."

Towards the end of the video, Ariana Grande finally reaches the studio where Wonder has been playing all along. All the live sketches of the five lead characters from the movie join them in their animated appearances, dancing and singing alongside the duo in spotlights of their own.

Talking about her feature in Faith prior to its release on Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show in September 2016, Grande said:

"I'm featured on a Stevie Wonder song, man, that's like, what? I'm, like, done now, I'm good... that's it for me."

When Fallon asked Ari what was the experience of sharing a booth with Stevie Wonder like, the 7 Rings singer called it "surreal," further adding:

"Not only did I get to sing with him but were in the same booth, so it was like, me and Stevie Wonder, arm in arm, holding hands, in the booth, singing together, like, laughing, having a good time"

Ariana Grande went on to say that:

"Every time I got comfortable with the fact that I was in a booth, arm in arm with Stevie Wonder, he would hit a Stevie run and I would be like, 's*** that's Stevie Wonder'."

Eight years after the song's release, Ariana Grande and Stevie Wonder's collaboration touched 100 million streams on Spotify in July 2024, making it her 99th song to cross the mark.

The plot of the movie revolves around Buster Moon's attempt to save his failing theater. This leads to the birth of a singing competition which gives hope to many townsfolk, including Rosita, Ash, Meena, Johnny, and Mike.

Chaos ensues as a mistakenly-added zero in the competition's winning prize creates a frenzy in the town. But in the end, Buster manages to save his theater against all odds, drawing confidence from the hopeful and passionate lead contestants.

Ariana Grande and Stevie Wonder aren't the only stars to have lent their voices to Sing. The American comedy has several other celebrities voicing their protagonists at Buster Moon's theater.

The main voice cast includes:

  • Matthew McConaughey - Buster Moon, the optimistic koala bear
  • Reese Witherspoon - Rosita, the pig housewife
  • Scarlett Johanson - Ash, the punk-rock porcupine
  • Taron Egerton - Johnny, the teenage gorilla with a gangster father
  • Tori Kelly - Meena, the shy elephant with intense stage fright
  • Seth MacFarlane - Mike, an arrogant white mouse street singer
