Beyoncé might have a boisterous personality and a larger-than-life presence onstage, but her tattoos have always been minimalistic. The 32-time Grammy winner has a number of subtle tattoos on her fingers, hands, and hips that are easy to miss for the casual watcher because of their minimalism.
Currently, Beyoncé has two tattoos, both on her left ring finger. They are the Roman numeral (IV) and a tattoo of three dots. Beyoncé also had another tattoo of an angel on the hip which she removed just one week after getting it done.
Beyoncé's tattoos and their supposed significance explained
Here is a thorough explanation of all of Beyoncé's past and present tattoos and their possible significance.
Angel tattoo on left hip
Beyoncé's first-ever tattoo became a regrettable decision for the 42-year-old. The Cowboy Carter singer got a praying angel inked on her left hip by the famous tattoo artist Mister Cartoon.
In a 2002 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Queen Bey recollected walking into a tattoo parlor with "no idea what she wanted." After consulting with Mister Cartoon, she decided to get the praying angel inked but regretted the decision the very next morning.
In an interview for People Magazine in 2010, the singer recalled going through a lot of pain to get the tattoo removed. She also concluded by saying that she wouldn't get another tattoo until she was ready to get something permanently inked in her body.
Beyonce recalled,
"It [praying angel tattoo] was very, very beautiful. But the next day I woke up, and I was like, 'Oh my God! What did I do?' So literally the next week, I started getting it removed. It's gone now. I went through so many years of pain. I wish I'd taped it for young people to see."
'IV' tattoo on the left ring finger
Her next tattoo came in 2008 when she got matching tattoos with her husband, Jay-Z. Fans speculate that the two got matching tattoos to commemorate their wedding ceremony.
IV is four in Roman numerals and the number has a huge significance in the life of the Grammy winner. The singer and her husband both have birthdays on the 4th (Beyoncé celebrates her birthday on September 4 while Jay-Z does it on December 4). Moreover, the two got married on April 4.
She later did some alterations to her tattoo and added some extra lines so that the design looked like a combination of the Roman numeral 'IV' and the letter 'J'.
'Three dots' tattoo on the left ring finger
Queen Bey showed off her new tattoo right when she revealed her reworked 'IV' tattoo on Instagram. Fans were quick to notice the minimalistic design that consisted of nothing but three dots.
Although Queen Bey hasn't revealed the significance of her tattoo, many fans suggest that it symbolizes her three children, Blue Ivy, Sir, and Rumi. The color difference is subtle, but the middle dot is blue as opposed to the black dots on the sides. The middle dot supposedly represents Blue Ivy who was born on January 7, 2012, while the other two represent her two twins Sir and Rumi who were born on June 13, 2017.
