Everything we know about Eminem's upcoming studio album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)
The first mention of Eminem's upcoming album came from Dr. Dre during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! back in March, where the legendary producer cited the Detroit rapper's plans for a new album and confirmed his involvement in the production.
On April 26, Eminem uploaded the official teaser trailer for the album, following the theme of Slim Shady's untimely passing with a mock news reporter covering the death of Marshall's controversial alter ego.
By using the term “coup de grâce” in the album's title, the rapper appears to be hinting at the LP marking the end of an era. Coup de grâce is a French term that refers to a merciful, yet finishing, blow delivered to one's victim.
The trailer also featured an appearance from 50 Cent, who recounts the troubles he faced dealing with Slim, calling the rapper a "psychopath." Check out the full trailer for The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) below.
As part of The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)'s official album rollout, the Houdini singer dropped two lead singles that went viral and sparked several conversations online, fueling excitement for his upcoming project.
The first single that Em dropped was a track titled Houdini, alongside a music video that draws inspiration from his earlier work like Without Me and My Name Is, with a production that samples Steve Miller Band’s 1982 track Abracadabra.
The visuals depict the rapper battling his alter ego after Slim Shady gets transported from the early 2000s into 2024. The music video features cameo appearances from Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Jimmy Iovine, Snoop Dogg, Marshall's daughters, and more.
Em's lead single was distributed to all DSPs (Digital Streaming Platforms) on May 31 and debuted at No.1 on Billboard's Global music charts.
On July 8, Eminem followed up with the second single titled Tobey, featuring verses from Big Sean and BabyTron. The track's title appears to have been inspired by Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, where Tobey Maguire played the titular character.
The rapper also teamed up with production house, Lyrical Lemonade, and Cole Bennett, to shoot and direct the music video for Tobey. This marks the second time Em and Bennett have worked together, with their first collaboration coming from the rapper's feature on Doomsday Pt. 2, from the production house's debut studio album All Is Yellow.
With less than two days left before Eminem's The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) is delivered to DSPs, fans and the hip-hop community are eagerly waiting to get their first listen to his new project. Em's upcoming album appears to delve into themes of rebirth, cancel culture, death, industry status, and more.
The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) officially follows up on Eminem's 2020 LP Music to Be Murdered By, which debuted at No.1 on Billboard's Global 200 album charts in its first week, selling close to 300,000 album equivalent units.
