Sean P. Diddy Combs was arrested on September 16, 2024, and charged with s*x trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
If found guilty, the music mogul could face up to 15 years in prison. Diddy has denied all charges against him and has reportedly pleaded not guilty.
Diddy’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, in a statement to the US Weekly in September 2024, described the charges as unjust:
"We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office."
He continued:
"Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man, and proven philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, adoring his children, and working to uplift the Black community.”
P. Diddy’s indictment follows multiple assault lawsuits filed against him from November 2023 to September 2023.
The embattled mogul’s allegations have caused some singers to choose not to be associated with him by removing his name from their lyrics.
Kesha and other artists who have tweaked song lyrics about P. Diddy
1) Kesha
Kesha’s altered version of her hit track Tik Tok debuted during her performance with Renee Rapp at the Coachella Festival in April 2024. It quickly became apparent to fans and media that Kesha had switched up the part of the lyrics that mentioned Diddy’s name.
The original lyrics of the song, released on August 7, 2009, read:
"Wake up in the mornin' feelin' like P. Diddy/ (Hey, what up, girl?)/ Grab my glasses, I'm out the door, I'm gonna hit this city (Let's go)."
According to Newsweek Magazine's report on October 2, 2024, Kesha performed the song with the altered lyrics:
“Wake up in the morning like, ‘F*** P. Diddy.”
Kesha and Renee Rapp reportedly raised their fingers as they sang the revised lyrics. The lyrics alteration came in the wake of P. Diddy’s homes being raided by Homeland Security in March 2024 and the allegations of s*xual assault against him.
In August 2024, Kesha announced via her X account that she would re-record the song to incorporate the new lyrics.
2) Maren Morris
On September 19, 2024, Maren Morris took a page from Kesha’s book by tweaking the lyrics of her popular song Rich, which originally features Diddy’s name.
The country-pop song, released in June 2016 as part of Maren Morris’ hit debut album HERO, includes lyrics that allude to Sean Diddy Combs’ wealth:
"Boy, I'd be rich, head to toe Prada/ Benz in the driveway, yacht in the water/ Vegas at the Mandarin, high roller gambling/ Me and Diddy drippin' diamonds like Marilyn/ No, I wouldn't be drowning in all your IOUs."
During the songstress’ performance at the Bourbon & Beyond Music Festival on September 19, 2024, Morris carefully omitted the 54-year-old mogul’s name from the lyrics.
The new version of the song debuted in light of P. Diddy’s arrest on September 16, 2024. According to a report by The US Magazine on September 21, 2024, Morris reposted footage from her performance on her Instagram Story on September 21, 2024, which she captioned, “F*** Diddy.”
3) Joe Jonas
Following Joe Jonas’ performance with The Jonas Brothers on September 28, 2024, fans and media have speculated that the 35-year-old singer might have omitted Diddy’s name from his hit song Cake By The Ocean.
The R&B song, released in November 2016, as part of DNCE’s debut Extended Play, SWAAY, features lyrics alluding to P. Diddy:
"Walk for me, baby (Walk for me now)/ I'll be Diddy, you'll be Naomi, woah-oh/ Let's lose our minds and go fu**in' crazy/ I-I-I-I-I, I keep on hopin' we'll eat cake by the ocean, uh."
The chorus typically alludes to Diddy and Naomi Campbell’s relationship back in the early 2000s, but during this performance, the lyrics were reportedly changed to something else that fans are still debating.
According to a report from US Weekly Magazine on October 1, 2024, footage from his performance at the LDC Arena in Paris was shared on social media. The sound from the footage was reportedly muffled, and some fans theorized that he had replaced Diddy with Watts, referring to Naomi Watts, the actress.
Others speculated that the mogul’s name had been replaced with “Martin.” The Jonas Brothers had previously performed the song in their London and Madrid shows in the same month without any alterations to Diddy’s name.
On September 24, 2024, attorney Gloria Allred stated that she was representing an unnamed number of persons with allegations against P. Diddy. Subsequently, in October 2024, the Buzbee law firm and AVA Law Group held a press conference to announce that they would be representing 120 more persons who had come forward with s*xual assault allegations.
