Former My Chemical Romance drummer Bob Bryar was found dead at his Tennessee home on November 26, 2024. According to TMZ, Bryar was "the longest-tenured drummer" in the band's history.
My Chemical Romance is a New Jersey-based rock band that was formed on September 12, 2001, just one day after the infamous 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. According to The Rolling Stone, the band's formation was related to the 9/11 attacks.
Vocalist Gerard Way reportedly experienced the effects of 9/11 firsthand while working for Cartoon Network in New York City, which inspired him to create something that could change the world. The band's current lineup includes vocalist Gerard Way, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero, and bassist Mikey Way.
Over the years, My Chemical Romance has featured multiple members, including several drummers. The rock band has had four drummers so far, namely Bob Bryar, Jarrod Alexander, Matt Pelissier, and Michael Pedicone. Bryar played for the group from 2004 to 2010.
Bob Bryar, Michael Pedicone, and others: My Chemical Romance's drummers over the years
The first drummer to have played for My Chemical Romance was Matt Pelissier, who represented the band from 2001 to 2004. He was replaced by Bob Bryar in 2004, who remained with MRC until 2010.
After Bryar, Michael Pedicone served as the band's drummer from 2010 to 2011 before he was reportedly dismissed. Jarrod Alexander then replaced Pedicone as MRC's drummer in 2011 and remained with them until 2012.
Matt Pelissier (2001-2004)
Matt Pelissier was one of the founding members of My Chemical Romance and played for them from 2001 to 2004. He contributed to the rock band's debut studio album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, released in 2002.
Following the release of the band's second studio album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, in 2004, MCR's manager Brian Schecter reportedly asked Pellissier to leave the band. No reason for this decision was confirmed. The drummer was eventually replaced by Bob Bryar in 2004.
Bob Bryar (2004-2010)
Bob Bryar joined My Chemical Romance in 2004 after they completed one of their tours in Japan. He reportedly first met MCR members while they were touring with The Used in 2004.
Bryar replaced Matt Pellissier soon after and was featured in the band's 2006 album, The Black Parade. The album received critical and commercial success, achieving double platinum status in the UK and the United States.
Bob Bryar also wrote a few songs for their 2010 record, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Shortly before the release of Danger Days, Bryar left MCR. After working with other bands for a short period, he retired from the music industry in 2014.
In March 2010, My Chemical Romance's rhythm guitarist Frank Ieto took to their official website to announce Bryar's departure. The official announcement said:
"As a band, we have been very fortunate over the years that our sweet times have greatly outweighed the sour ones, and a great deal of that is owed to you, the fans. Which is why we wanted this news to come from us and not some bullsh-- gossip site."
It continued:
"As of 4 weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways. This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and expect you all to do the same."
The reasons behind Bryar's departure from My Chemical Romance were not confirmed by any members or Bryar himself. According to MTV, the drummer allegedly had a feud with some of the other band members.
In a 2016 interview with Alternative Press, Bob Bryar spoke fondly about the album The Black Parade, saying:
"To be very honest with you, no, I have not listened to the record in a very long time. I am very proud of it, but the memories that come along with listening to it are too much for me. I wish it wasn’t like that, but it is. You won’t find one My Chem item in my house. Not one. I don’t need to be bummed out every day hearing or seeing things relating to something that I thought would last forever."
Bob Bryar reportedly passed away at his Tennessee residence in November 2024. The former drummer was last spotted alive on November 4, 2024. As reported by TMZ, authorities are investigating his death, although no foul play is suspected as none of the musician's equipment was touched.
Michael Pedicone (2010-2011)
Michael Pedicone replaced Bob Bryar in My Chemical Romance after the latter's departure in 2010. The drummer performed with the band at various shows for almost a year before he was reportedly sacked after allegedly being caught "stealing."
Shortly before his departure, Pedicone took to X to rave about the band's performance, claiming it was the "greatest experience of his life" to perform with MCR.
In an official announcement on the band's official website, Fran Ieto announced Pedicone's departure, writing:
"The relationship between My Chemical Romance and Michael Pedicone is over. He was caught red-handed stealing from the band and confessed to police after our show last night in Auburn, Washington. We are heartbroken and sick to our stomachs over this entire situation."
MCR also mentioned they did not intend to press any charges on Pedicone and only wanted "out of their lives." Pedicone was replaced by Jarrod Alexander, a former member of Dead Country.
Jarrod Alexander (2011-2012)
Jarrod Alexander was the last official drummer associated with My Chemical Romance before their split in 2013. He is an established American drummer who has played with multiple punk bands, including The Suicide File, Throwdown, A Static Lullaby, and Dead Country.
Alexander replaced Pedicone as the drummer of My Chemical Romance in September 2011, featuring in the band's Honda Civic tour. He was also part of the band's shows during their Australian Big Day Out tour and played in their final show at the Bamboozle Festival.
In 2019, My Chemical Romance reunited, with Alexander returning as their drummer. He was scheduled to tour with them in 2020. However, the tour was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
After their temporary breakup between 2013 and 2019, My Chemical Romance reunited in 2019. In May 2022, they released their first new song since their break, titled The Foundations of Decay. The band also headlined the When We Were Young Festival 2024 in Las Vegas and is set to tour in 2025.
