Linkin Park made their official return on September 5, 2024, with an announcement about the band's new members. They took to social media to state that while Emily Armstrong will join them as the co-vocalist, Colin Brittain will be their new drummer/co-producer.
In the announcement, Big Bad Brad (BBB) spoke on behalf of Linkin Park, expressing excitement about the chapter of their career. BBB then went on to appreciate their fans for their relentless "support and love" over the years.
"In awe of @emilyarmstrong and @colinbrittain for their talent, passion, and partnership. Deep gratitude to all my bandmates for their humility, hard work, and friendship." - BBB captioned their Instagram post.
The post showed images of Emily working with Brad and Mike, creating music in the studio, and a photoshoot of the new Linkin Park crew. BBB hinted at new music dropping soon by referencing the band's upcoming album, From Zero. The album was officially announced at the end of their first live set in seven years.
The Linkin Park event at Los Angeles' Warner Lot last week was a live-streamed performance of the band playing an hour-long set for a few hardcore fans. This marked the band's first public performance in seven years since Chester Bennington's passing in 2017.
"You got to marry the technical part and the emotion. It’s Chester’s voice, and it’s mine, but I want it to still feel the way I feel when I listen to the song, because that’s what the fans love. There is a passion to it that I’m hoping I can fill," Emily Armstrong stated during Linkin Park's exclusive Billboard interview.
LP took fans through live renditions of some of their greatest hits like In The End, Numb, and more. Emily took the stage halfway through the second track of their set list titled The Emptiness Machine.
The new record will officially act as the lead single for their upcoming From Zero project that drops on DSPs (Digital Streaming Platforms) later this year.

Fans and the music community received the performance well, as many highlighted the impressive live debut of a rediscovered single, Lost. The single was included on their Meteora 20th Anniversary Edition set in 2023, which peaked at No.40 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts.
The performance was extremely nostalgic, with the band playing tracks that were released over two decades ago. Shinoda even shouted out Chester Bennington during the live stream when he stated:
"This is a very special day for us. In the role of Chester Bennington, this afternoon is each of you."
Not long after this, LP opened with their fresh single, The Emptiness Machine. The song sees the band blending their familiar sonic direction and unique sound with the creative artistry of new members, Emily Armstrong and Colin Brittain.
"Already pulling me in / Already under my skin / And I know exactly how this ends, I / Let you cut me open just to watch me bleed / Gave up who I am for who you wanted me to be / Don't know why I'm hopin' for what I won't receive / Fallin' for the promise of the emptiness machine" - Emily Armstrong and Mike Shinoda sing on 'The Emptiness Machine'.
Toward the end of their live set, Mike and Emily recount their first interaction, with the lead vocalist jokingly citing how she initially "couldn't sing" and joined the band because she looked the part. She said that she learned to sing in "eight months [to] a year."
"Actually, we're gonna have a lot more stuff coming around the corner about us, like the story of all of us," Mike noted.
Before the performance of their last song for the night, Bleed It Out, Mike Shinoda highlighted Linkin Park's plans for the coming months. These include tours, releases, and the official announcement of the band's eighth studio album, From Zero.
"The first song we played 'The Emptiness Machine', that song is out now! That video is out now! Tour dates, tickets to those shows are out now! Lastly, all the information about the pre-orders for our new album which is titled 'From Zero' is out now!." - Mike stated.
