Taylor Swift has officially become the only performing artist in history to have the highest-grossing concert run with her Eras Tour, which reportedly sold over $2 billion in ticket sales only.
According to multiple reports, The Eras Tour earned over $13.9 million per show on average. The Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film added close to $261 million to the total revenue generated from her concert run, whose net income earned surpasses records previously held by Coldplay.
Taylor wrapped up her 21-month concert run on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. The world tour, which included 149 individual performances and was attended by over 10 million fans, kicked off at the State Farm Stadium on March 17, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona.
Taylor took to Instagram on Thursday, December 12, to share a carousel of pictures from her final show, expressing gratitude to fans and her team who made the tour a "rare event."
She addressed the crowd during Sunday night's show, sharing her opinion of how The Eras Tour unfolded, calling it:
"The most exciting, powerful, electrifying, intense, most challenging thing I've ever done in my entire life."
A list of controversies from Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour
Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour has been a global phenomenon for almost two years, captivating millions of fans worldwide with electrifying performances and dazzling productions.
While the tour grabbed headlines for its record-breaking run, some moments went viral for reasons outside of the live music event. From AI-generated pictures to unexpected celebrity moments, below are 8 of the most talked-about controversies from Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.
1) AI-Generated NSFW pictures of Taylor Swift circulate on X
On January 24, 2024, "Taylor Swift AI" began trending on X after thousands of NSFW AI-generated images of the pop star were reportedly shared on the social media platform.
A day later multiple tweets were deleted, credited to Swifties mass-reporting accounts posting these pictures. The AI-generated pictures inspired discussions over "non-consensual" content being shared on social media.
Congressman Tom Kean tweeted out concerns regarding the supervision of Artificial Intelligence as the tech space evolves, explaining:
"As a father, I am deeply disturbed by how effortlessly this kind of technology can be used in an explicit nature and minors can easily be the victims. We are living in a highly advanced technological world that is ever-changing, and proper oversight is necessary. Let's not wait for the next victim to realize the importance of AI regulations."
2) Thailand PM alleges Taylor and AEG cut an "exclusivity deal" with Singapore government
In March 2024, following her Australia leg, Taylor Swift took The Eras Tour to Singapore for six sold-out shows.
Not long after Taylor announced her world tour, Thailand's former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin alleged that the pop star had supposedly cut an "exclusivity deal" with the Singapore government.
The alleged deal supposedly guaranteed she wouldn't perform in any other country in Southeast Asia. Thavisin claimed the deal struck between the Singapore government and Eras Tour promoter AEG Presents offered Taylor subsidies of up to $3 million.
"[AEG] didn't tell me the exact figure but they said the Singapore government offers subsidies of between $2 million and $3 million. But the Singapore government is clever. They told [organizers] not to hold any other shows in [South-East] Asia." - PM Srettha Thavisin said at a business forum in Bangkok.
Singapore's Tourism Board addressed these allegations in a press release, explaining how they "recognized" the demand for Taylor to perform in the country, stating:
"There will be significant demand from Singaporeans as well as fans across the region for her to perform in Singapore, and we worked directly with AEG presents for Taylor Swift to perform in Singapore."
3) Unattended child controversy at Eras Paris concert
During Taylor's four-show stop in Paris in May, photos of an unattended infant laying on a pile of clothes at the La Defense arena went viral across social media platforms.
Outraged netizens took to platforms like X and Instagram to express their shock at the viral image, with many claiming organizers should've taken the necessary precautions for attendees with children.
Swifties defended the backlash Taylor and the tour's organizers received, citing that the child's parents should be held responsible.
"It wasn't the whole fandom that brought that child, it was the parents. Instead of calling out "Swifties" maybe call out the parents that brought the baby to the concert, and put them on the floor in the extremely crowded pit," a fan stated.
4) Netizens upset over fans waving pictures of Taylor's grandmother at Nashville concert
During her stop at Nashville on May 5, 2023, clips of fans near the mainstage waving pictures of Marjorie Finlay, Taylor Swift's grandmother, went viral on X.
While the pop star expressed gratitude and appreciation towards attendees and fans who honored her late grandmother, several users commented against the tribute displayed at Tennessee's Nissan Stadium.
"I just know that my mom, right now, is just like bawling and has been for the solid last five-and-a-half minutes, and I love you guys so much. That was so meaningful and so special," Taylor Swift stated.
5) Taylor Swift seemingly responds to Dave Grohl's viral gibe
In June 2024, Rock band Foo Fighters performed live in London, where lead singer Dave Grohl seemingly made fun of Taylor and The Eras Tour, stating:
"We like to call our tour the 'Errors Tour. We've had more than a few eras, and more than a few f**king errors as well. Just a couple. That's because we actually play live. What? Just saying. You guys like raw, live rock 'n' roll music, right? You came to the right f**king place."
Online speculation suggests that Dave's gibe stemmed from the online backlash his daughter, Violet Grohl, received over tweets she made against the Grammy-winning pop star a year earlier.
Later that month, during Taylor's stop in London, the pop star seemingly addressed Dave Grohl's remark about her "not performing live," when she stated:
"Every one of my band members, every single one of our crew, my band who's gonna be playing live for you for 3.5 hours tonight, they deserve this so much. And so does every one of my fellow performers. And you just gave that to us so generously, we will never forget it."
6) The Live Nation-Ticketmaster controversy
In December 2022, Ticketmaster, a subsidiary of Live Nation Entertainment, faced several controversies regarding issues of inflated ticket prices and customer dissatisfaction over their operations.
According to a report from August Man Magazine, Ticketmaster was chosen as the primary distributor for Taylor's The Eras Tour tickets in 2022. Given this was the pop star's first live concert run since 2018, the fan demand for her new tour was reportedly at an all-time high.
The organization seemingly opted for a "verified fan presale system" to combat scalpers, but the restricted pool of available tickets combined with the website crashing resulted in fans being stuck in a waiting queue for several hours.
With Ticketmaster's system failing, several hackers managed to scalp tickets using automated bots, leaving thousands of fans unable to purchase tickets for The Eras Tour.
Botted tickets would later appear on re-sale websites being sold at 10 times the original price, resulting in fans taking to social media platforms to express their disappointment with Ticketmaster's dynamic pricing structure and ticketing system.
The pop star addressed the issue in her Instagram story, citing how Ticketmaster assured her they were in a position to handle the massive demand for her tour, explaining:
"There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I'm trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward."
7) New Orleans "Homeless Eviction" controversy
Before Taylor Swift arrived in New Orleans to perform at the Caesars Superdome for the weekend starting on October 25, 2024, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced that nearly 75 homeless people would be evicted from streets near the venue.
Straight Arrow News claims that Governor Jeff Landry reportedly gave homeless individuals until October 24 to leave the designated areas, or else state troopers would be called in to "force them out."
Nate Fields, director of Homeless Services & Strategy in New Orleans, addressed this matter, stating:
"This is not the way to make a positive change. Why are we hiding our homeless population? I don't care about the Taylor Swift concert. I care about every individual who stands behind me, who lives out here every single day."
8) Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's "pre-planned breakup" controversy
Over the past year, multiple fans have expressed their support for Taylor and Travis Kelce's relationship, who reportedly started dating last year.
Since going public with their relationship, Taylor has been spotted at multiple NFL games, while Travis and his family were seen attending The Eras Tour together this past October.
However, in September, reports of an alleged "break up" document were circulated across social media, which detailed that their relationship was part of a supposed "Comprehensive Media Plan."
A report from Daily Mail suggested that the alleged document, supposedly created by Los Angeles-based PR firm Full Scope, outlined a strategy for their split, setting a date for September 28, 2024.
A spokesperson for Full Scope addressed these rumors, claiming them to be "entirely false and fabricated," threatening legal action against those responsible for the forged document, stating:
"These documents are entirely false and fabricated and were not created, issued, or authorized by this agency. We have engaged our legal team to initiate proceedings against the individuals or entities responsible for the unlawful and injurious forgery of documents."
Since her tour began, Taylor Swift won two Grammy awards, re-recorded her older projects, and delivered three No.1 singles.
She also dropped her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, which has held the top spot on Billboard 200 for 16 non-consecutive weeks.
