Future's first solo project for the year titled MIXTAPE PLUTO was finally delivered to streaming platforms after being initially teased by producer Southside during his XXL exclusive interview in July.

"I just mixed all the worlds up. I put people on songs with people that you wouldn’t normally hear. I’m working on Mixtape Pluto with Future right now. I’ve been working a lot with Roddy Ricch, too. It’s a new sound, like a whole new vibe." - Southside stated in his XXL interview.

The Atlanta rapper's MIXTAPE PLUTO was distributed to Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and other major DSPs (Digital Streaming Platforms) today via Freebandz and Epic Records.

The album lacks any features and focuses on Future's solo performances across 17 tracks. However, before the project's release, fans speculated on the inclusion of Travis Scott and Gunna as potential features.

These claims were made given that Travis Scott made a cameo appearance in the promotional video for SOUTH OF FRANCE and an alleged leaked version of TOLD MY seemingly featured a Gunna verse.

Top Picks from Future's new project 'MIXTAPE PLUTO'

Future's new MIXTAPE PLUTO marks the rapper's third project for the year, following up on his collaborative album series with Metro Boomin, We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You, both of which went No.1 on the Billboard 200 album charts.

The first installment in their series hosted the viral Like That record, which ignited the 2024 rap beef after an extremely aggressive performance from Kendrick Lamar. This eventually led to the track hitting No.1 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts.

With netizens continuing to discuss and debate the rapper's decision to release a project without features, the 17 tracks included on MIXTAPE PLUTO do a lot to deliver trap bangers reminiscent of the ATL native's early 2010 work.

The project includes full-length records as well as shorter songs, with solo verses, all of which are performed over spacy, melodic, and hard-hitting trap productions credited to producers like Southside and Wheezy. Notable themes that are explored in Future's new mixtape have been provided below:

  • Wealth

  • Love

Future closes out MIXTAPE PLUTO with a more serious introspective track titled LOST MY DOG, which finds the rapper speaking on themes of loss, regret, death, self-harm, drug abuse, and excessive behavior.

A primary theme in this track appears to find the rapper regretfully looking back on all the times he lost people close to him, either to gang warfare or drug abuse. Memorable lines from LOST MY DOG include bars like:

"Poppin' opioids, just trying to relax / Thought I was done with it, then got the news about you / All it made me wanna do is relapse / Lost my dog to fentanyl / I go up and I cry for you / Love you so much, I'd die for you / Lost my lil' homie to a gang war / I don't cry, I go slide for you / All these lighters in the sky for you"

A majority of the records included on MIXTAPE PLUTO draw heavily from trap music tropes, many of which Future helped establish back in the early 2010s.

Although the mixtape doesn't sonically compare to the production on Future's collaborative albums with Metro Boomin, from earlier in the year, what stands out on this project are the consistent bouncy performances.

The rapper's autotuned vocal performances, personal lyricism, catchy cadences, memorable bars and several key production-mix elements highlighted in the review help significantly elevate the mixtape's listening experience.
