In brief, exploring Young Thug’s plea deal
On Thursday, Young Thug was sentenced to 5 years in prison commuted to time served, 15 years on probation, and a backloaded 20-year sentence in case the probation is violated. This came after he pled guilty to six out of eight existing charges while also pleading no contest to the racketeering conspiracy charge and one felony count of leading a street gang.
As part of his sentencing, the YSL leader was also asked to keep his distance from Atlanta’s metro area for the first 10 years of his probation. However, the only exception is returning to the city at least four times a year to participate in a live anti-gang and anti-violence presentation to community children.
Furthermore, the 33-year-old rapper was ordered to stay away from all suspected gang members, his co-defendants, and his alleged victims. He would also need to submit court-ordered random drug tests and should not possess a gun. However, he has been allowed to make business-related international and domestic trips, adhering to the probation guidelines.
Young Thug was arrested and indicted by the state of Georgia in May 2022 and charged with 56 counts of illegal substance trafficking, racketeering, firearm possession, and violating the Georgia RICO Act, among others. Since then, he has been held without bail at the Fulton County Jail, awaiting trial starting in November 2023. Several of his 27 co-defendants also pled guilty and took deals from the prosecution.
