Drizzy's aforementioned Instagram stories were perceived as a response to the controversy surrounding the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show set in New Orleans. The decision to choose Kendrick Lamar over New Orleans native Lil Wayne for the performance at the show was endorsed by many but faced backlash from others, including industry veterans like Nicki Minaj, Birdman, and Cam'ron.
Considering Drake's recent infamous beef with Lamar, fans believe that his stories are a way to show support for Wayne amidst the controversy After all, Drizzy began his career at Wayne's record label Young Money Entertainment. Social media users had mixed reactions to Drizzy's pictures, as many thought the rapper was choosing sides and trying to get one over Lamar. One user said:
"He finally joined the crying gang publicly"
Many mentioned the controversy surrounding Drake and Lil Wayne's alleged mutual ex-girlfriend and noted that the rapper was only taking a stand for Wayne now. However, a few users were pleased that Wayne's protege defended him and criticized Jay-Z and Roc Nation's treatment of their beloved rapper.
Lil Wayne not being the headliner at Super Bowl LIX sent Nicki Minaj on a tirade
On Sunday, September 8, the internet went wild when Kendrick Lamar was announced as the headliner for the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. Lamar is the talk of the town at the moment, fresh from his highly successful feud with Drake, hit single Not Like Us, and a sold-out Pop Out concert
Lamar was seen launching footballs in front of a giant American flag for his announcement video. The rapper reminded people that there was only one opportunity to win a championship and not two. Lamar shared in a statement quoted by Billboard:
"Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I'll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one."
Despite the overwhelming excitement surrounding his performance, some rappers and social media users were critical of the decision to have Kendrick perform at the big game. The Super Bowl is scheduled to occur at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The choice of venue was seen by some as a snub to New Orleans native Lil Wayne.
Lil Wayne's protégé Nicki Minaj took to Twitter on Monday, September 9, and went on a tirade against Jay Z and Roc Nation, who have co-produced the Super Bowl halftime shows since 2019.
Minaj also praised Wayne for doing a lot for her and Drake's careers, noting that Wayne "changed the FACE of hip hop."
