A woman's tweet about Liam Payne's fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina has garnered a lot of traction, given she reportedly shared the information before the news of the singer's demise was confirmed. On October 17, 2024, an X user @NsbSo tweeted at 2:20 AM, stating:
"Mutual friend is in Argentina at the same hotel as Liam Payne and she said he just jumped off his balcony????? There are ambulances everywhere and things are nuts. I sincerely hope he’s okay if this actually happened. Holy smokes dude!!!!"
While she did not mention Liam's death, her X post amassed 25.3 million views. In a follow-up post, she mentioned that there were receipts about the incidents but they weren't hers to share.
Elaborating what her mutual friend saw and heard, the same X user also tweeted that Liam was "apparently high and acting highly abnormal in the lobby." She added that the singer didn't seem like he was in a good place. The woman's follow up tweets received a lot of attention as well with over 2 million views on both.
"I didn’t think it was anything this big"—X user expresses frustration over breaking news about Liam Payne
While particulars of Liam Payne's death are yet to be confirmed, BBC reported that the singer's room was on the third floor of the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires. Police arrived just minutes after the 31-year-old artist reportedly fell from the balcony wherein his body was discovered in the courtyard. Liam was pronounced dead at the scene and emergency services stated that there wasn't any possibility of resuscitation.
Shortly after posting updates about Liam Payne's fall from the balcony, X user @NsbSo posted a screenshot questioning her mutual friend about breaking international news. Internet users began to comment under the X user's post with some calling her act insensitive toward Liam and his family.
Expressing frustration over the amount of attention her tweets gathered, the woman mentioned in a lengthy tweet that she was done replying to everyone and that she had a real-life and real job to cater to. Responding to the negative comments about her tweets, she wrote:
"I don’t think it’s that insane of me to tweet about something crazy my friend told me. I didn’t think it was anything this big, I assumed it was a mistake or something and that he was okay! I didn’t think it would leave my circle."
The X user continued:
"I tweeted, left for an hour or so, and came back to the news of him passing away and the tweet had blown up. Apologies to those who feel I was insensitive, it wasn’t my intention!"
The woman also shared that her mutual friend who shared news of Liam's fall from the hotel balcony was shaken up but is doing okay and that nobody should speak ill about her. Additionally, she also said that she's not a news station and isn't obligated to share more screenshots or information about the incident, asking internet users to "go watch CNN or TMZ or something!".
She also claimed that the news channels were using a cropped version of one of the selfies her friend sent with Liam Payne in the background. Toward the end of her tweet, she asked netizens to go vote. She also addressed bodyshaming comments, stating nothing other internet users could say would hurt her.
Several celebrities shared condolences for Liam Payne's demise on social media. The singer's former boyband One Direction's members Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson also took to Instagram on October 18, 2024, and stated that his passing devasted them.
