On October 16, 2024, Liam Payne, the former member of One Direction, met a tragic end as he fell from the balcony of a hotel room. Payne arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, earlier that month on a vacation with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.

The investigation into Liam's death is ongoing, leaving TV projects he was involved in uncertain about how to proceed. One such project is Netflix's Building The Band, a music competition show featuring 50 singers competing to form their own bands without meeting each other.

Although the production of Building The Band has been completed, its release might be pushed forward in light of the singer's unfortunate death.

Liam Payne was one of three judges on Building The Band

Netflix's Building The Band featured a competition to form a band, with judges and mentors who were members of successful groups. Alongside One Direction's Liam Payne, the panel included Kelly Rowland from Destiny's Child and Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls.

AJ McLean - the founding member of Backstreet Boys - is hosting the show. When The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Netflix to comment on how the show will unfold in the wake of Liam Payne's death, no comment was issued.

Building The Band received a green light from Netflix in May 2024 and was reportedly going to air sometime in 2025. According to Entertainment Weekly, Netflix described the show as:

"a truly unique competition show where building the perfect band is all about chemistry. The singers are in complete control as they seek to form their very own bands in individual 'booths' without ever seeing each other. All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit."

Payne's fans were in Manchester to watch the live shows of Building The Band in August

The production of Building The Band was wrapped up in late August, culminating in three live shows of the finale, filmed in the Aviva Studios in Manchester. To watch Liam Payne live, several fans flocked to Manchester to attend the show, some of whom also tweeted about meeting the former band member there.

According to Deadline, another fan of Payne's also revealed that the audience serenaded a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for him on August 30, as Payne turned 31 one day ago.

Kelly Rowland, a fellow judge on the show, also spoke positively of her experience of working with Liam Payne, telling People magazine:

"Liam is absolutely hilarious. I didn’t know how funny he was, so I’m getting to know him, and he is so cool."

The autopsy report of Liam's death revealed that the singer died of "polytrauma and internal and external bleeding." Following his death, a series of substances were also reportedly found in his room, suggesting that Payne might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the fall.

Besides Building The Band, another show whose release might be pushed ahead due to Liam Payne's death is Boybands Forever. The BBC documentary doesn't feature Payne directly, but Simon Cowell - the entrepreneur and TV personality who not only created 1D but also signed the band to his entertainment agency, Syco Entertainment, in 2011.

The documentary was initially expected to air in November 2024 but might be pushed ahead due to Liam's tragic fall in Argentina.
