Last Thursday, October 24, Lil Durk was arrested in Florida over charges of murder-for-hire targeting Quando Rondo, his long-time rival who was allegedly the intended target in the 2022 shooting. According to CBS News, Durk's charges were associated with the open fire two years ago in which, Rondo's 24-year-old cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, ended up losing his life.
Robinson's death came roughly a year after the 3 Headed Goat rapper's older brother, Dontay Banks Jr., lost his life in a similar shooting incident. Dontay, who went by the stage name of DThang, was shot outside of Club O— a strip club located in Harvey, Illinois— on June 5, 2021. According to the police reports, Banks was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
Lil Durk's brother was shot in broad daylight
Two days after DThang's death, WGN9 News reported that the rapper was shot on the streets in broad daylight, with the incident taking place on a Sunday, just a little after 12:20 PM.
According to the news outlet, before the shooting, a Harvey police officer had observed a patron in the area possessing a gun. As an altercation ensued outside of Club O, Officer Muhamed responded to it, sustaining a gunshot wound in the process from an unidentified suspect.
On the night of June 5, another shooting incident took place— this time on West 155th Street, where Sinica Price was injured and taken to a nearby hospital by the responding police officers.
Being treated at the South Suburban Hospital, Price was later pronounced dead. WGN9 News also claimed that police believed both incidents could have a link, with the latter possibly being the retaliation for DThang's death.
However, no culprit was caught or arrested from either scene. Following DThang's death, several fellow rappers shared their condolences on social media. One of them, Lil Reese, wrote: "Long live DThang love you broski..."
DThang's death followed the shooting of King Von in November 2020
Besides being Lil Durk's brother, DThang was also a member of his hip-hop group, Only the Group (OTF). His was the second death of the group's member, following the death of King Von a year ago.
The circumstances around the death of King Von— a close friend and collaborator of Durk's— were similar to that of his older brother. The drill rapper, who was originally named Dayvon Daquan Bennett, died in a shooting incident on November 6, 2020.
According to Billboard, the incident took place early morning, around 3 AM, when two hip-hop group members got into an argument outside the Monaco Hookah Lounge in Atlanta.
It soon turned into a shootout in the parking lot, in which three people lost their lives, one of which was King Von. While the rapper was taken to hospital right away, he couldn't survive the gunshot wound and lost his life later that day.
A statement released by the investigators of the case revealed:
"The rapper was shot during the initial shootout between the two groups of males, prior to police responding and attempting to stop the shooting."
Von started his career in hip-hop in 2017 and was signed to Lil Durk's OTF from the beginning.
Arrested earlier this month, Lil Durk is currently being held in the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, without the availability of a bail bond. Prior to the Petty Too rapper's arrest, five other OTF members were also arrested from California.
Lil Durk's arrest comes eight months after the Back in Blood rapper received his first-ever Grammy— the Best Melodci Rap Performance for his track, All My Life.
