Lauryn Hill's success as a solo singer and motherhood came at the same time. The artist first gained fame as the frontwoman of The Fugees, a hip hop trio. She became pregnant with her eldest son Zion when she was recording her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Hill later revealed that she was advised by many in the industry to not bear a child at the height of her professional success. However, the 49-year-old stuck to her decision and even wrote a song To Zion to talk about this phase of her life.
Lauryn Hill has six children (four sons and two daughters). Earlier, Hill was in an on-and-off relationship with Bob Marley's son Rohan Marley for almost two decades starting in the 1990s. During that time, she had five kids namely, Zion, Selah, Joshua, John, and Sara. The songstress later gave birth to Micah in 2011, whose father's identity wasn't disclosed.

Zion Marley, 27
Rohan Marley and Lauryn Hill welcomed Zion on August 3, 1997. At that time, Lauryn was at the peak of her success with The Fugees and was recording her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in August 1998, the songstress recalled adversities she faced while being pregnant with her eldest son.
“A lot of people were against my having a child so early, and at that point in my career. After the success of The Score, I was suddenly forced to go off the road, because I was seven or eight months pregnant. It was one of the first things I did where I put my happiness first,” Hill said.
She even dedicated a song in her debut solo album explaining how everyone wanted to focus on her career and not bear the child. Titled To Zion, Lauryn Hill sang:
“I knew his life deserved a chance/But everybody told me to be smart / 'Look at your career' they said / 'Lauryn, baby use your head' / But instead I chose to use my heart / Now the joy of my world is in Zion.”
Selah Marley, 25
Selah Marley was born to Lauryn and Rohan on November 12, 1998. After the birth of their second child, Lauryn Hill took the huge decision of not releasing her second album and devoted all her time to her family.
At just 13, Selah started her modeling career. So far, Lauryn Hill's daughter has worked for industry juggernauts like Beyonce's Ivy Park, Chanel, and Calvin Klein. However, the 25-year-old's 'biggest passion' is music. In an April 2017 interview with W Magazine, she opened up on how her mother became her inspiration.
"My mom had a studio in our house and I would go there and she was always making music and she was always doing something creative on tour, doing something. So it definitely really inspired me," Selah said.
In another interview with Flaunt Digital in 2017, Selah reflected on the legacy of both sides of her family and how she had 'such large shoes to fill.' The young songstress explained that her parents had inspired her to perform at the highest level in all her endeavors.
Joshua Marley, 22
Joshua Marley was born on December 5, 2001. The 22-year-old goes by the name YG Marley. He has taken to music just like his mother Lauryn Hill and also collaborated with her in the past. Recently, he sang hit songs, including Praise Jah in the Moonlight and Survival, with his mom in a May 2024 episode of The Tonight Show.
On December 5, 2019, Lauryn Hill shared a heartwarming message for her child on Instagram.
"I look forward to seeing you flower more and more everyday. Pls take manhood seriously, approach it with care, responsibility, character, dignity, humility and make room for laughter. Don’t be afraid to ask for love and support when you need it. I love you immensely!” she wrote.
Joshua welcomed his first child Caleb in 2021. Later, he also had twins according to the artist's Instagram post on Father's Day.
John Marley, 21
John Nesta Marley was born on June 28, 2003, to Lauryn and Rohan. In a 2008 interview with People magazine, Rohan Marley revealed that John was very focused on academics growing up.
Additionally, he now takes a keen interest in fashion and is often seen posting various outfits on Instagram. In 2019, John joined his brothers and sisters in a Rag and Bone campaign and posted about it on his Instagram.
On June 29, 2020, Lauryn Hill posted a birthday wish for John with a photo collage of the 21-year-old. She wrote:
“I tell the story often of how your smile was a reflection of love and a source of clarity for me during challenging days," she wrote in the caption. "May you always connect to that source of love and let no fear or vain thing stop you from being your greatest. I love you always!!”
Sara Marley
Rohan and Lauryn expanded their family for the fifth time with the birth of Sara Marley on January 2, 2008. Seven months later the same year, Rohan told People magazine that the couple had difficulty coming up with the right name for their fifth child. The two wanted a name that translated to 'Glory of the Ark,' but couldn't come up with any at first. Thus, they decided to call her Baby Marley in her early days.
According to one of her Instagram highlights, Sara Marley is an athlete who participates in track and field events and basketball in her school.
Micah Hill, 13
On July 23, 2011, Lauryn Hill gave birth to Micah Hill. However, the songstress revealed that Rohan Marley was not his father in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
In a now-deleted post, she said:
“Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but our five children together remain a joy to both of us.”
On his 11th birthday, Lauryn Hill had a special message for her youngest son on July 23, 2022. Posting a photo of Micah on Instagram, she wrote:
"Happy Happy 11th birthday to my beloved and youngest son Micah!! May your enormous heart and sense of kindness always be preserved. May you continue to pursue the things you love with great passion and inspiration ... Love Always, Mom."
Micah was treated to a basketball-themed party on his 11th birthday. The event was also attended by NBA basketball player Derrick Rose.
