What was Beyonce’s Homecoming about?
Homecoming; A Film by Beyonce portrays the nuances of one of the most iconic headlining performances in the history of the Coachella Balley Music and Arts Festival. It was also the first time that a black woman got to headline the iconic musical carnival.
Produced, written, and directed by Queen Bey herself, the film was also released with an album Homecoming: The Live Album.
Netflix’s concert film features two of the most iconic performances of the 42-year-old from April 14 and April 21, 2018. Nicknamed Beychella by her fans, the performances also acted as a tribute to people of color across the globe. What made it more iconic was that the band exclusively featured HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) alumni and celebrated the culture, traditions and the immense contribution of Black people in the American hip-hop society.
Midway through the performance, Beyonce was joined by the former Destiny’s Child Members, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, and the iconic reunion after 12 years made the evening even more special. She was also joined by her sister Solange and husband Jay-Z.
Homecoming won big at the Grammys that year and bagged the Best Music Film award. Moreover, it received praise from critics and audiences alike, who hailed it as one of the best concert films of all time. In 2018, Beyonce’s performance was live-streamed on YouTube and it was declared as the most-streamed music event in history, with over half a million people watching simultaneously at its peak.
Furthermore, Beyonce made an epic announcement during her Coachella 2018 performance, declaring that she would expand her HBCU fund. Titled BeyGOOD Initiative's Homecoming Scholars Award program, the scholarship fund supports one student from each of the eight HBCUs in their second year of college.
Beyonce fans were saddened in 2017 when the pop icon wasn't able to perform at Coachella 2017 due to pregnancy complications with twins. The singer was also criticized by fans for pulling out of the show in the last moment. However, she more than made up for it with a memorable show at next year's Coachella.
Homecoming also hit big numbers when it was launched on Netflix as over a million people streamed it on the very first day of its release. It went on to become the fourth-most popular documentary film of 2019 and the only concert film in the most-watched film list of the year.
