In July 2019, the photo-realistic remake of 1994's The Lion King was released, with Beyoncé lending her voice to Nala. Directed by Justin Favreau, the film boasted an ensemble cast, including Donald Grover, Seth Rogen, Alfre Woodard, Eric Andre, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, James Earl Jones, Shahidi Wright, John Kani, Billy Eichner, and others.
Getting the 32-time Grammy winner was surely an expensive endeavor for Justin Favreau and his team as Beyoncé was reportedly paid a whopping $15 million for her efforts in voicing the lioness. However, that amount was just the tip of the iceberg as the original soundtrack was released in the form of The Gift album, with Queen Bey getting credits for most of the titles.
Moreover, it was announced that all the songs would have their videos in the form of the Disney+ original, Black Is King.
How much did Beyoncé actually make from her involvement in The Lion King?
The Hollywood Reporter stated that Beyoncé earned a total of $15 million from her voice-acting stint in The Lion King. This is a substantial amount and is at par with what artists at the peak of this craft take home after a lead voice-acting gig. However, Beyoncé bagged an amount more than $15 million from her entire The Lion King project.
It is important to note Beyoncé was also at the helm of the original The Lion King soundtrack titled The Gift and her compensation for both her voice-acting and composing gigs added up to $25 million, according to a report by Vibe.
"Disney has reportedly agreed to pay a whopping $25 million to secure Beyoncé's involvement with the project,” tweeted the publication.
Another page on X called BEYHIVE, which is known to get exclusive updates about Queen Bey, also reported the same figure as her compensation for The Lion King project.
"Our EXCLUSIVE on the $25 million final negotiations for Disney‘s Lion King & an African-inspired soundtrack produced entirely by Beyoncé!" tweeted BEYHIVE.
It is interesting to note that The Gift was released by Colombia Entertainment and Parkwood Entertainment, with Queen Bey being the owner of the latter. Therefore, the 42-year-old earned even more than the quoted paycheck from the sales of the album in the subsequent months after its release in July 2019.
With The Gift Beyoncé also released three singles, Spirit, Brown Skin Girl, and Black Parade with their own music videos. All three were released with Black Is King which came out on July 31, 2019, on Disney+.
In a July 2020 interview with Good Morning America, Beyoncé discussed the process of making visual albums for her singles and working with the reimagined version of The Lion King as a whole.
“It’s been a year in the making. I worked with a diverse group of very gifted directors and actors and creatives from all over the world to re-imagine the story of The Lion King. The narrative unfolds through music videos, fashion, dance, beautiful natural settings, and raw, new talent,” explained Queen Bey.
Finally, she implored fans to watch Black Is King and explained its ulterior significance of rejuvenating the rich history of 'black.'
“Black Is King means Black is regal and rich in history, in purpose, and in lineage. I hope y’all love it, I hope you enjoy, and I hope y’all see it tonight," concluded the singer.
The Gift sold 54,000 units in the first month and was placed #2 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. Furthermore, it was also at the top of the Top R&B Albums Chart.
How much is Beyoncé's net worth in 2024?
According to Forbes, Bey's net worth stands at an eye-watering $760 million as of May 28, 2024, and the magazine also establishes that she is well on her way to achieving the coveted billionaire status.
Queen Bey's wealth is mostly attributed to her album sales, which accounted for over $300 million over the illustrious career of the 32-time Grammy winner. In the last 20 years, she has recorded over 200 million units sold, making her one of the highest-selling artists of all time.
2023 was an extremely profitable year for Queen Bey as she made more than $100 million from her Renaissance Tour, spanning 59 concert dates in 39 different cities.
However, the singer's net worth is still dwarfed by her compatriots like Taylor Swift, who has already entered the billionaire club and has a net worth of a whopping $1.3 billion as of July 8, 2024. Her net worth received a boost thanks to the incredibly lucrative Eras Tour that grossed over $1 billion by the end of 2023, making it the most successful concert tour in history.
