How did Nicki Minaj lose weight? Singer revealed her diet secrets in 2019

Nicki Minaj is the queen of rap in her own right. The 41-year-old has accomplished a lot in her close to 15-year-long career in the music industry, with five studio albums and four world tours under her belt.

Minaj became a mother in 2020, giving birth to her first child with her husband, Kenneth Petty. On a 2019 episode of Queen Radio, Minaj talked about how she lost weight the year she got married to Petty, saying:

"[I] channeled all of my power and now I have control of it. I control how it manifests in my life."

There has been a lot of curiosity about what Nicki Minaj's diet looks like and how she combines it with workouts to maintain her physique. The following provides a look at the rapper's daily diet.


Minaj talked about her weight loss journey on Queen radio

In a 2019 episode of Queen Radio, Nicki Minaj called that year one of her "favorite years so far," as she successfully lost considerable weight that year. Talking to Barbz, she shared that she had learned to use her power to accomplish more.

The first example of Minaj putting that lesson into action was by changing her diet. She said:

"I was trying to do this diet and I kept putting it off. I didn't think I could have discipline in what I ate... Once my mind was committed to it, my body committed to it."

While Nicki Minaj had 20 more pounds to lose to reach her goal at that time, she was happy with the growth she had achieved. Minaj was also focused on self-love despite appearances, saying that she thought a lot about "being kind to yourself" in 2019.

She contemplated how one could allow themselves to be human while being motivated and powerful at the same time. Being easy on herself was one of the tough tasks the rapper had achieved that year, with the realization that "nothing and no one is perfect."

Nicki Minaj then went on to highlight how women struggle with acceptance of their bodies more often, elaborating:

"One time I was thinking... what if one of my best friends said the things that I say to myself? The people who love you don’t talk to you like that, don't treat you like that, don’t say things like that to make you feel pain, but we do that to ourselves. Women, we do that to ourselves all the time over our bodies."

Nicki Minaj confessed she hates working out

In July 2013, Nicki Minaj was in a Q&A session with her fans on X for her Marie Clare cover issue, where she was asked about her workout plan. In response, the Anaconda rapper revealed that she didn't have one, adding:

"I don't work out. I hate it. I don't mean to sound super lazy... I tried it for a time. I lost my b***s."

Having claimed that hitting the gym negatively affected her physique, Nicki added that she depended solely on her diet to maintain her physique. She then elaborated,

"When I feel I need to lose weight, I just change what I eat. I cut out carbs and sugar. I'll do water and protein and fruit."

However, while Minaj believed working out wasn't for her, she didn't discourage her fans from doing so, adding, "But I do think that you should work out." The rapper also loves to dance, which is her most preferred form of cardio.


Nicki Minaj is currently traveling for her fourth headlining tour - the Pink Friday 2 world tour - which will conclude on October 11 in Elmont, New York.
