American actress and singer Maya Hawke recently spoke to Variety in an interview published on June 6, 2024, and discussed her new music. The Stranger Things actress is 25 years old and made her acting debut in 2017 as Jo in BBC's Little Women.

Maya is the daughter of Kill Bill fame Uma Thurman and Before Sunrise actor Ethan Hawke. In her recent interview with the publication, Maya Hawke spoke about how she lost her voice for six months after she played Napoleon the Pig in an Animal Farm musical. She told Variety that she had a "very limited" range and added:

"I had a stronger voice as a teenager, then I got vocal nodules during drama school when I played Napoleon the Pig in a musical version of ‘Animal Farm,’ and lost my voice for six months. I didn’t get surgery because I didn’t want to lose the spirit of my voice, but I’ve been working on it."

The Hang In There singer then went on to mention that she is proud of her voice as an actor. She said she preferred to carry on the things she liked about herself into her music instead of crying into her pillow about not being able to sing like Ariana Grande. Maya then said she believed in putting "personality, character and storytelling into a vocal moment."

Talking about her recently released album Chaos Angel, Maya Hawke told the publication that she wrote notes about the beginnings of the project and the inspiration behind it.

"My life felt out of control, and disorganized. I wasn’t happy. And I wasn’t making the people around me happy, either," she said.

When asked how she got started on the album, Maya Hawke mentioned that she wrote phrases like "If you're OK, I'm OK," which she focused on as she created new songs. The Generous Heart singer then shed some more light on the same and told Variety:

"Finding these repeated phrases, I was interested in breaking patterns. I found that in my mid-20s, I finally realized the mistakes I was making… multiple times. Friendships and relationships that would collapse over the same issue. It’s a classic growing up thing. You reach a certain point and realize that you’re the problem."

She mentioned that with her latest project, she tried to "narrow in" on the problems and hypocrisies she was experiencing in the hope that she could break them.

Moreover, the Sweet Tooth singer commented on her style of making music and stated:

“I’ve never held anything back when I’ve made my records. I never tried to be less me. And I wasn’t ever being shy. But as I got older and got to know myself as a human and as a writer, I got better at describing my feelings, having self-awareness, knowing where I am and how to talk about it."

Maya Hawke added that her latest album Chaos Angel is more personal and vulnerable, and said, "the writing feels closer to me." She then mentioned that she hopes she feels the same every time she makes a record.

The recently released album comprises 10 songs, including, Black Ice, Dark, Missing Out, Wrong Again, Okay, Better, Big Idea, Hang In There, Promise, and Chaos Angel, and is available to enjoy on several music streaming platforms.
