Rihanna has expressed her thoughts about her past music and fashion on different occasions. The Barbadian singer boasts multiple chart-topping hits and nine Grammy awards.

In an interview with MTV in March 2015, the singer stated that she didn’t like a lot of her old songs, before the release of her Anti album in 2016:

Rihanna said:

"I find that when I get on stage now, I don't want to perform a lot of my songs. They don't feel like me. So I want to make songs that are timeless."

The Umbrella singer added:

"I wanted songs that I could perform in 15 years. I wanted an album that I could perform in 15 years.”

Moreover, fans have also watched the Fenty mogul’s fashion evolve over the years. From her see-through gown that she donned while receiving the Style Icon Award in 2014 to her creative Met Gala looks, she has come a long way. In 2019, she founded her own fashion house, Fenty under LVMH, Unfortunately, her clothing line closed down two years later in 2021.

Rihanna spoke about her fashion journey at the launch of the Fenty x Puma Creeper Phatty Earth Tone sneakers on April 17, 2024. The singer told British Vogue that some of her fashion choices in the past “gave her the ick.”

She explained:

"It's gonna sound hypocritical because I did so much s--- in my life. I had my ni**les out, I had my panties out. But now those are the things that as a mom, an evolved young lady — emphasis on young — things that I just feel like I would never do, I'm like, 'Oh my god, I really did that? Ni*s out?’ "

"There should be a show of growth" — Rihanna on her music evolution and fashion choice

Rihanna shared her thoughts on her past music projects in April 2024 and gave hints about what her new album would sound like when she was interviewed by Extra TV. For the unversed, Rihanna's last studio album was released in 2016 and it was titled Anti.

She hinted that her next album would be "amazing" while giving reasons for its delay. The singer said that she didn't feel like it represented the evolution of her music and the time she had spent away from the music scene.

Rihanna added:

"There should be a show of growth, right? I want to play, and I feel like music is a playground, and I want to have fun with it and show truly where I am at.”

In the same interview, the singer also spoke about motherhood changing her perception of fashion. She explained that she leaned more towards "comfortable clothes," as a mother because of her constant travels. She stated:

“When you become a mom, your style goes from like ‘blah’ to ‘let's see what fits’ to ‘I’m gonna be a bad b**ch today.'"

At the Fenty Hair launch party on June 10, 2024, Rihanna told Entertainment Tonight about "rediscovering" some tracks in her highly-anticipated ninth album, dubbed R9 by fans. The superstar added that she was starting over and was prepared to return to the studio.

The singer stated that she didn't want to abandon the songs she already had, but she was listening to them from a new perspective to identify the melodies she still loved.

The Fenty Beauty mogul further said:

"I think that music, for me, is a new discovery. I’m rediscovering things. I have been working on the album for so long that I kinda put all that stuff aside and now I’m prepared to go back in the studio. I’m gonna start — give me a second!”

Rihanna’s musical and style evolution showcases the singer’s growth and adaptability to different eras of music and fashion.
