Be it her drag makeup, energetic on-stage performance, or relatable music, Chappell Roan is certainly a growing sensation. The singer-songwriter, who made her debut in 2015, finally got mainstream success this year in 2024.

Roan's admiration for the drag community is another factor that attracts fans. The openly queer singer is eager to share her stage with drag queens and has expressed her love publicly for Sasha Colby multiple times.

The RuPaul Drag Race winner, on her part, has also reciprocated Roan's references in kind. Talking to Entertainment Weekly in July 2024, Colby shared her gratitude towards Chappell Roan for mentioning her as an inspiration, as she added:

"All I can say is, goddess sees goddess, you know? Greatness sees greatness! Your favorite artist's favorite artist, baby!"

Chappell's admiration of drag artists, in general, is also reflected in her giving local drag artists the opportunity to open for Roan on her tours.

Roan first made the "your favorite artist's favorite artist" comment at Coachella

On April 12, 2024, Chappell Roan debuted her first Coachella performance, wherein she introduced herself as "your favorite artist's favorite artist." The comment went viral as many fans captured it on video and circulated it online.

Two months later, when the Casual singer appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Fallon recalled the comment, admitting that he loved it. To that, Roan responded:

"That was a reference to Sasha Colby, and Sasha Colby said, ‘I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen,' and I was like, it just hit me through the heart. And so I hope one day Sasha Colby watches me, and that’s why I said it."

Besides Chappell Roan's famous comment, her set at Coachella turned out to be a massive success and bumped her single Good Luck, Babe as her first entry into the Billboard 100.

According to USA Today, the Femininomenon singer was initially slated for the smaller side stage in the festival but was later swapped with Kesha's stage to manage the overwhelming crowd that had arrived to see her.

Sasha Colby praised Chappell Roan following her comment

Interviewing with Entertainment Weekly in July, Sasha Colby praised Chappell Roan for crediting her as an inspiration, adding:

"It's always been so lovely, because drag has always been a mirror of pop culture. Since Drag Race, we are pop, the tastemakers, and pop girlies look to us for inspiration — much like Chappell Roan!"

Describing the first time she heard Roan's comment—and why it was important to her—Sasha Colby said,

"It's been wild. The night of the finale for season 16, when I gave up the crown, was also the night of the finale for my Stripped [tour], and that's when Chappell said it at Coachella. It all coincided, and has snowballed ever since."

Colby confessed that seeing Jimmy Fallon say her name was "kind of wild." She then recalled her recent conversation with Chappell, describing it as "very meet-and-greet-y."

Soon after the interview, the two stars shared the stage at Seattle's Capitol Hill Block Party in Washington. Despite the concert being headlined by Remy Wolf, Chappell Roan drew a huge crowd there, and brought out Colby as a surprise guest in the middle of performing HOT TO GO!

Colby then jumped alongside the Red Wine Supernova singer, following suit in the signature steps of Roan's hit cheer song, with the crowd cheering them on loudly. After the concert, Chappell also uploaded a selfie with Colby on her Instagram story, captioning it:

"Me saying I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist at Coachella was a nod to her, how much I admire her, and how much drag is intertwined with my project. She is everythinggg 2 me."

With a friendship budding between the two artists, fans might see more of the Colby-Roan duo on stage in the final leg of her ongoing headlining tour—The Midwest Princess Tour—in September.
