Snoop Dogg is trying his hands at movie production and is an executive producer in Ariel Vromen's 1992 film through Death Row Pictures. Starring the Fast & Furious fame, Tyrese Gibson in the lead, the crime-thriller was released in global theatres this Friday, August 30.
The movie is built around the backdrops of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, a time that was life-changing (or altering) for many, including Snoop Dogg. The rapper who lived through the unrest was working with Dr. Dre back then on projects like Deep Cover and The Chronic.
The two projects were released in the same year (1992) and helped kick-start Snoop Dogg's music career while solidifying his presence in West Coast hip-hop. Looking back at the tragic times, Snoop told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2024:
“1992 was a life-changing time for me, from Deep Cover to The Chronic. But as things in my life were coming together, everything in L.A. was coming apart.”
Sharing how he had to be part of Ariel Vromen's 1992 which captures the Los Angeles riots, Snoop Dogg added:
“1992 is a heist movie that really captures all of that. This movie is about an L.A. moment... I had to be a part of this. And it’s only fitting that the film come out under Death Row Pictures as Death Row is synonymous with L.A. culture in the ’90s, ya dig?”
The Los Angeles riots of 1992 lasted over six days and were speculated to be one of the most devastating to date. A Los Angeles Times report from April 2017, linked the riots to over 63 deaths, 2,383 injuries, and estimated property damages of over $1 billion.
Snoop Dogg attends the Lionsgate premiere of 1992 and more
The executive producer of Ariel Vromen's 1992, Snoop Dogg, attended the premier of the crime thriller film this Tuesday, August 27. The premiere celebrations for the movie were hosted by Lionsgate at Regal Cinemas in downtown Los Angeles.
The LA event was attended by the film's lead, Tyrese Gibson, and co-stars Scott Eastwood, Karsen Liotta, attorney Ben Crump, and DeRay Davis. The event also saw a surprise appearance from Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, who came to support their Fast & Furious pal, Gibson.
The Lionsgate film is one of the last movie appearances for the Goodfellas legend, Ray Liotta. He was reportedly suffering from respiratory issues, including pulmonary edema, and passed away on May 26, 2022. Ray Liotta's daughter, Karsen Liotta, walked the red carpet on Tuesday in honor of her father.
Feeling grateful about sharing the silver screen with the late actor, Tyrese Gibson told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2024:
“Ray Liotta blessed all of us in life while doing this film. For 1992 to be Ray’s last offering, we all feel so fortunate to have captured such a masterful and chilling performance.”
Snoop Dogg's film explores the 1992 LA riots through an ex-convict, Mercer Bey (Gibson), who braves through the local unrest to rebuild his life and relationship with his son. The story follows Mercer in an action-packed battle against time and tribulations amid the heist at his workplace and the kidnapping of his son.
Talking about the significance of the film for him and why he wanted to be part of it, Snoop Dogg told Rolling Out at the LA premiere celebration on August 27:
“Since taking over Death Row, I wanted to do different ventures and take it into places it’s never been. This opportunity arose through Tyrese and Lionsgate.”
The rapper continued:
“It felt like it was perfect because Death Row originated in 1991, 1992, and this movie was all around that period in time. So, just trying to do different business and expand the brand and take it into different regions.”
The film opened in the United States this Friday, August 30, along with other American films like Reagan, Slingshot, AfrAId, and City of Dreams. A Variety report from August 28 hints that 1992 will aim for $2.5 million Box Office between the Friday and Monday’s holiday.
Snoop Dogg's executive-produced film, 1992, has received an IMDb rating of 7.1 out of 10 and has an all-time popularity score of 625. It has received a 67% score on the Tomatometer of Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a relatively positive review from professional critics.
