American singer and songwriter Teddy Swims recently made an appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show wherein he talked about his latest single The Door. In the July 12 episode, he shared how it was inspired by his experience as a victim of partner abuse.
Talking about his previous relationship, the singer stated:
"I know a lot more men on the planet are abusive, but it can also be the opposite way too. I was getting abused for a bit and it was tough."
Teddy Swims also mentioned that he later ended his relationship with his abusive girlfriend and managed to reconcile with her to an extent so they could maintain a cordial friendship. The lyrics of Teddy's latest track referred to his past relationship as it was killing him at the time:
"I said I would die for you baby / But I can’t take this pain no mo’ / I thought I was willing / but tonight I saved my life when I showed you the door."
"Sometimes you just don't blend together" — Teddy Swims addresses his previous abusive relationship in The Door track
It is important to note that during his appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, Teddy Swims did not name his former partner when he was discussing one of his prior relationships as an abusive victim. The singer talked about how love brings two people together and keeps them together for too long.
Elaborating on his statement, Teddy stated:
"It doesn't matter how much you love someone, sometimes you just don't blend together."
The singer also admitted that he stayed in the abusive relationship for too long because he loved the person. He believed that his ex-girlfriend was going to turn around and change the abusive behavior.
Dismissing the incident as something that happened more than a year ago, Teddy Swims shared that he is very happy in his current relationship with Raiche Wright, who is performing on tour with him. While the exact timeline of when he started dating Raiche is not clear, the couple made it official after attending the pre-Grammy party held in February 2024.
Teddy Swims and Raiche have often showcased their love for one another via Instagram and during live concerts as well.
This is not the first time Teddy Swims has talked about his abusive relationship from the past. In an interview with the Associated Press in September 2023, the singer shed light on his personal struggles while promoting his debut album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1). Teddy stated:
"We weren’t great together…toxic s**t, substance abuse and alcohol. So, it’s a lot of my journey through that, and my journey to also recover (from) how I treated myself and (how I) felt like I was unlovable.”
In the same interview, Teddy also spoke about finding the other side of the situation and letting it go. He added that it was the one thing that saved his life.
The singer is currently busy with his tour titled I've Tried Everything But Therapy, which spans Australia and New Zealand. The tour began on July 4, 2024, and is set to end on July 19, 2024.
