Big Sean delayed the release of his upcoming album Better Me Than You after its tracklist got leaked. Sean's sixth studio album was all set to release on Friday, August 9. Back in July, a 14-track version of the album's alleged tracklist was leaked by a disgruntled Kanye West fan in response to an alleged Kanye West diss on Sean's July 16 On The Radar Freestyle.
However, on Tuesday, August 6, Sean released a reel promoting his new single, On Up where he claimed that his new album will be out "soon". When asked by an Instagram user why he said "soon" instead of August 9, Sean responded by revealing that his project was delayed. The rapper replied,
"I gotta push it back just a lil bit. Music done but jus organizing listening events, shows, etc. Might need a extra week or 2 to plan. 🤲🏾✨"
A 14-track version of Big Sean's Better Me Than You leaked in July
On July 16, Big Sean released his On The Radar Freestyle. The track was released to mixed reception following a controversial verse, which was perceived as a diss towards the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, particularly Kendrick Lamar. The track went:
"N----s looking for engagement like they got their knee bent, I got better things to do than find someone to beef with,"
However, radio host and social media personality DJ Hed put out a tweet right after the track's release where he revealed he had talked to Sean, who told him that the diss was not meant for Kendrick. DJ Hed wrote,
"And it was not for Dot. Bar was directed at a different Gemini,"
This led people to speculate that the shade was meant for Kanye West, a Gemini, who initially played a hand in Big Sean's career before the relationship between the two recently went sour. Sean was signed to Ye's label Good Music for 14 years before leaving in 2021. In a 2021 Drink Champs interview, Ye claimed that signing Sean was the "worst thing" that he's ever done.
The alleged shade did not sit right with Reddit user bigseandon811, who in retaliation released what was perceived to be a 14-track version of Sean's upcoming album. The social media user wrote,
"Since he wanna disrespect Ye so much, here’s the album, f**k him and his whole team,"
According to the user, the leaked version was a version of the album from a "couple of months" ago and was called Feelings & Random Thots with an alternative title called Better Me Than You. After being told that Kanye did not know him, the user presented a "plot twist" and claimed that Ye himself had told him to leak the album.
Hours after the leak spread through the internet like wildfire, Big Sean himself acknowledged the leak via a tweet. The rapper also teased a collaboration with the alchemist. Sean released a snippet of his track featuring The Alchemist and wrote,
"Might as well start droppin, before they leak it all, got damn 😂 BIG SEAN x THE ALCHEMIST soon 🔥"
The rapper further acknowledged the leaks during an Instagram live on Thursday, July 18, where he claimed that the user was lying regarding Ye, allowing them to leak the album. He said,
"I know he ain't do that s**t. I love Ye. Without him, there would be no me."
He added,
"I been there since Graduation. I got to study, contribute, give energy to every project. 808s, Beautiful Twisted... I know he wouldn't do that, that's trash. So whoever did do that, just know it did f**k me up."
Big Sean once again reiterated that Ye would never do that and added that Ye's label Good Music made more money off his tracks than he ever did. Kanye West has not responded to the allegations at the time of writing this article.
