Tyler, the Creator opened up about his distaste for the hype behind artists who put out "meme records"
Monday's teaser for Mavericks with Mav Carter's new episode featuring Tyler, the Creator showcased the rapper having some choice words for a few "musicians." As mentioned earlier, Tyler claimed that despite not wanting to seem like a hater, he had "hater energy" because he believes that he was "that good."
When Mav Carter asked Tyler if his frustration was a result of his love for the art form that is music, Tyler answered:
"I love this art form so much bro and there’s so many n****s out right now that aren’t musicians that are getting treated like musicians ’cause they make meme records."
He further elaborated his point and lashed out against the publications that give these artists any kind of hype. He said:
"Publicly, they’ll be like, ‘I don’t give a f**k about music. I just do this shit for money. It’s the Spider-Man meme of the next n***a when every publication is like, ‘Hell yeah, let’s put that out!’ You’re taking up space from n****s like me."
Towards the end of the teaser clip, Tyler, the Creator also stated that someone was going to watch the podcast and cut out the aforementioned part and use it without any context.
Earlier in the interview, Carter asked Tyler what a regular day in his life looks like. The rapper responded that he woke up at 5:45 in the morning that day, ran on the treadmill for 11 minutes, and went in a sauna for around 9 minutes. He also recalled eating a donut that he thought was "delicious." When asked what kind of donut he ate, the rapper joked that he had a regular glazed donut and wanted it to have "no personality at all." The episode also teased Tyler opening up about why he thought Eminem owed him an apology.
The title for the upcoming episode, which will premiere on August 14, reads:
"Tyler, The Creator Opens Up About Art, Internet Culture, and Music on Mavericks with Mav Carter."
Tyler has also previously opened up about his frustrations with the music industry. During a November 2023, interview with Nardwuar at his Camp Flog Gnaw festival, the rapper threw shade at certain shows like Complex's Sneaker Shopping and Hot Ones series of interviews because he believes they take away from actual music.
According to the Igor musician, artists needed to stop going sneaker shopping or "deep-throating hot wings for an hour." He told Nardwuar:
"Talk about your album. Talk about music. Talk about the 15 songs that you guys have spent time to get mixed and mastered and put your heart into and produced and did all these things."
After receiving backlash for his statements, Tyler, the Creator took to Instagram to put out a story in which he clarified that he could have talked about outlets that churn out more "negative stuff" but at that moment he didn't. The rapper also apologized to Hot Ones host Sean Evans and stated that the negative energy was not his intention at all. However, he also quipped that "deep throating chicken" sounded hilarious.
