Shakira, the Colombian singer and songwriter, recently opened up about the sacrifices she made in her 11-year-long relationship with Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué.
In June 2022, the pair confirmed the end of their relationship, shortly after the former Barcelona footballer was accused of cheating on the singer. The 47-year-old shared in a new cover profile with Marie Claire:
"I was in search for that man like my dad, who I’d have kids with and then make plans to be with forever – like my parents, who are still so in love. I made many sacrifices for this. I was loyal. But sometimes things don’t go as planned. You move on."
She is now reportedly dating actor Lucien Laviscount. The Emily In Paris actor and Shakira got together while filming her new music video for the track Punteria.
Shakira calls monogamy a ‘utopia’ two years after breakup with Gerard Piqué
While Shakira and Piqué were together for more than a decade, they never got married. The pair share two sons Milan Piqué Mebarak, 11, and Sasha Piqué Mebarak, 9.
On Friday, April 26, the singer candidly spoke about her relationships, friendships, and sacrifices. In the same cover profile:
"I cannot say that I don’t believe in love because I see the example of my parents after 50 years together; how they look into each other’s eyes and hold hands and can’t live apart from each other. I’ve witnessed love, I just haven’t been that lucky myself. Monogamy is a utopia."
Shakira also explained in the interview, that over the last couple of years, she has witnessed different types of love. She compared the affection seen in a friendship as opposed to a romantic partner and the benefits that come with such relationships. She said:
"But I’ve been compensated in other ways, with the love of my fans and my children and true friends. Oscar Wilde said that friendship is the purest form of love and I think that’s true. It lasts longer – at least in my experience. My relationship [lasted] 12 years but my friends will be there a lifetime. When hardship came, that’s when I learned how truly important friendship was."
In 2010, the Columbian singer and Piqué met on the set of the singer's Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) music video. The couple made their relationship public in May 2011. After they split in 2022, Piqué began dating event organizer Clara Chia Marti.
Piqué and Shakira announced their split through a representative who shared a statement that read:
"We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding."
The Wherever, Whenever singer also shared her thoughts about her current life with her children. Shakira revealed that she does wish for a family of four in the future. She added:
"I’ve made it my own personal objective to raise loyal boys, honest men. I want them to be men of their word. In today’s world, a person’s word is often worthless. People over-promise and under-deliver. And I want my kids to be exactly the opposite."
Shakira recently had a Bizarrap collab BZRP Music Sessions #53, which was released on YouTube on January 12, 2024. The song peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart and eventually broke 14 Guinness World Records.
