On June 26, 2024, Megan came live on Instagram to discuss an issue with the anime sample for her upcoming album. Talking to her fans, the rapper stated:
“I’m stressed out hotties. I just came on here to tell you guys about my day really quick cuz I’m going through it.”
Mentioning that her self-titled album is set to release at midnight of June 27, 2024, she said that her fans won't believe what just happened to her. Megan Thee Stallion described how she had to rush to her studio to change the entire song called Otaku Hot Girl owing to issues with anime sampling.
"The music is what’s really important to me": Megan Thee Stallion discusses anime sampling issues with upcoming album
In her Instagram Live, Megan Thee Stallion mentioned that she is grateful to have an anime sample, given that the song comprising the same was "probably the hardest" to clear.
She told her fans that when she first submitted the song, she was told that she couldn't cosplay any of the characters from the anime she mentioned in the music video. Additionally, she was asked to make some changes which she agreed to as she was desperate to have an anime angle in her song.
Talking about the issue, Megan mentioned that she got a mail stating that the names of the characters from an unnamed anime series will have to be taken out from the song. She mentioned that the inclusion of the character names made the "song make sense" and that it is "the whole song".
However, the sample owners told the rapper that they would either clear the character's names or the music, but not both. Megan Thee Stallion told her fans:
“The music is what’s really important to me. But the names really tied it all together.”
The rapper had to rush to her makeshift studio to make changes to the song. Megan also told her fans that she hopes that they like the song because she "had to jump through eight million hoops" to get it cleared. She also mentioned that once everyone hears the sample, it'll be clear why the anime production company was giving her a hard time.
The rapper's love for anime has been evident in her media appearances and social media pages as well. She was dressed as Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen at the 2024 Crunchyroll Awards in Tokyo, wherein she was the presenter for the Anime of the Year Award.
Additionally, Megan Thee Stallion has cosplayed anime characters multiple times, be it presenting the award at 2024's Crunchyroll Awards as Bruno Bucciarati from Jojo's Bizzare Adventure or her Instagram photoshoot dressed as Boa Hancock from One Piece.
The Not My Fault rapper also addressed an anime in GloRilla's single Wanna Be. Mentioning an Attack on Titan anime reference in the track, Megan's lyrics stated:
“I’m the female titan / I’m steppin’ on... I’m showin’ my t**ties / I tore up the city.”
Megan Thee Stallion's self-titled album will be released under her record label Hot Girl Productions, and will be her return to the music arena after 2022's Traumazine.
