Same Old Love hitmaker Selena Gomez opened up about speculations regarding undergoing plastic surgery. Gomez took to TikTok on Saturday, July 27, to comment on a video shared by physician's assistant and content creator Marissa Barrionuevo back in 2023, who claimed that she had no idea if Gomez did any work on her face. Gomez wrote:
"Honestly, I hate this. I was on stripes because of a flare-up. I have Botox. That's it. Leave me alone."
The content creator compared two before and after pictures of Selena Gomez and even requested her followers to let Selena be as she felt that the singer had gone through enough in her life. In a follow-up video, the creator apologized to Gomez, who accepted her apology and acknowledged that this was not about her and that she gets sad sometimes.
"I just get sad sometimes" - Selena Gomez replied to an apologetic Marissa Barrionuevo
In a TikTok video posted in April of last year, Marissa Barrionuevo posted a video about Selena Gomez. Barrionuevo was a physician's assistant at a Florida plastic surgeon's office named Farber Plastic Surgery and a TikTok content creator with over 74,000 followers and 4.8 million likes on the platform.
Marissa posted content related to plastic surgery, including analysis videos on celebrities who people speculate to have had plastic surgery done on their faces. Her video on Selena was in response to a viewer who asked for Marissa's honest opinion on Gomez. In the video, Marissa showcased two side-by-side pictures of Gomez, one from the 2023 Golden Globes and another from years ago.
The TikToker stated in the video that she "literally" had no idea what Selena Gomez had gotten done on her face. She said:
"I think she's been through so much in her life, especially medically related, so I don't think it's fair to speculate whether or not she's gotten cosmetic things done. I don't know what to attribute any of these changes to,"
Marissa explained that when it came to analyzing Botox and filler, she made videos when she was confident that the people she was analyzing had done the work. However, when it came to Gomez, she re-iterated that she had no clue what to attribute her "physical changes" to. The TikToker said:
"People say Lupus, people say other things. I don't know and at the end of the day, let's just leave her be. I feel like she's been through enough in her life and she's beautiful regardless,"
As mentioned earlier, Selena Gomez responded to the video on Saturday by saying that she hated this and that she was on "stripes" due to a flare-up. The singer acknowledged that she had Botox and requested people to leave her alone. In response, the PA made a follow-up video the very next day, and she apologized to Gomez for the old video.
Marissa talked about how she herself had gotten procedures done and loves to talk about it and normalize it. She captioned her video:
"Although I always try to lead with grace and mindfulness, I am sorry this upset you (and I understand why it did). I decided to stop making videos like this last year because of the negative impact it can cause. It was never my intention. ily I hope we can move past this and be besties,"
Gomez also replied to this video by saying:
"I love you. Not about you. I just get sad sometimes"
In a 2019 episode of Raquelle Stevens' Giving Back Generation podcast, Selena Gomez previously opened up about the internal and external struggles she faced after gaining weight as a side-effect of Lupus medication.
The singer was diagnosed with Lupus back in 2014. Gomez's 2022 documentary My Mind & Me touched upon the singer's physical and mental health struggles.
