Kendrick Lamar's recent rap battle with Drake was a major topic brought up during Jason Martin's appearance on The Bootleg Kev Podcast, where the rapper recounts K-Dot's initial reaction to hearing Drake's diss track Family Matters. The podcast episode was uploaded on Bootleg Kev's YouTube channel on June 6, 2024.
A 13-minute clip of the hour-long interview was uploaded to Bootleg Kev's official YouTube channel which found Jason Martin (formerly known as Problem) and Kev breaking down the diss tracks and comparing the Versuz battle to the likes of Kobe vs LeBron James.
Around the 7-minute mark, Bootleg Kev states how the back-to-back diss track war that started on May 3, was the "most exciting night of Hip Hop" he had ever witnessed. Problem then recounts how he hit up Kendrick Lamar immediately upon listening to Family Matters, supposedly telling him that they needed to respond back, when K-Dot texted back:
"Say Less."
Jason Martin then highlights how in the time he took to go to the bathroom and come back, Kendrick had already uploaded his response called Meet The Grahams. When he texted Lamar to highlight his surprise at hearing the diss track, Kenny supposedly stated:
"I've been waiting on [him] to drop something."
Jason then takes the conversation back to 2010 where he recounts being in the studio with some of the best rappers in the game, but highlights how Kendrick Lamar was "different". He cites an example of K Dot listening to a beat and then taking 20 minutes to write a full-length song, completed with stacked vocals.
Highlights from Bootleg Kev Podcast's "Kendrick Lamar vs Drake" discussion
The impact of witnessing the Drake vs Kendrick rap war finally taking place after almost a decade of sneak dissing was clearly visible from Kev and Jason's conversation, with both individuals highlighting the shock value of listening to records like Family Matters and Meet The Grahams.
1) Kev suggests that Kendrick Lamar "deep-fried" Drake
With the first couple of minutes spent discussing their appreciation for Snoop Dogg, Kev directs the conversation to the Kendrick vs Drake rap battle by shouting out Compton (Kenny's home) seemingly over the massive success of Not Like Us. Kev appeared lost for words as he tried to explain what it felt like witnessing Dot "deep fry" Drizzy on his diss tracks.
He suggested that Kendrick came out on top by drawing similarities to boxer Ryan Garcia's win over Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in New York, on 20 April 2024.
"Talk to me about what it was like just watching Kendrick Lamar deep fry ... you know, fry him up...it was like King Ryan, you know, when he f--ked up Haney," he said.
2) Jason and Kev discuss the "Drake Beehive"
Jason and Kev used personal examples of the difficulty they faced in dealing with Drake's stans online, where some individuals managed to secure and seemingly notify Martin that they had got his phone number in a supposed attempt to harass him.
Martin explained that he doesn't look at the beef as two "guys going against each other" but instead views the rap battle as a major SuperBowl event where there are two teams, Kendrick Lamar and Drake, citing how he's "rooting" for K-Dot.
"I didn't know Drake had a beehive. I was riding so hard for Kendrick the whole time before he even replied to f--kin' Push Ups, all that s--t. I was like man, hey bro Drake beehive.. it's real" - Kev explains getting targetted by Drake stans online for supporting Kendrick Lamar during the 2024 rap beef.
3) Jason Martin compares Kendrick Lamar's work ethic to Kobe Bryant
Jason Martin continued with his example of rooting for two teams by using an example where he explained that comparing Drake and Kendrick Lamar, would be similar to comparing LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.
He highlights how Drake would be LeBron in that situation because Kendrick and Kobe have a very similar mental work ethic, citing how The Mamba only cared about basketball, alluding to how all K-Dot cares about is Hip Hop.
His explanation for LeBron James being similar to Drake was by highlighting both the individual's versatility where James dominates everywhere on the court and Drizzy works with all kinds of artists across different genres.
"Listen man that's all he had, Dot works out and raps. That's it, so you were in a actual skill battle." - Jason Martin states later in the interview.
The interview is interesting as we get to see the perspective of how Kendrick Lamar supporters reacted to the 2024 rap battle, with Jason and Kev both acknowledging that they appreciate and enjoy listening to Drake's music but eventually had to side with Dot purely based on a skill level difference.
